Obadiah 1 - Christian Standard Bible CSB 17

Predictions of Judgment on Edom

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord GOD has said about Edom: ⓒ We have heard a message from the LORD; ⓓ an envoy has been sent ⓔ among the nations: “Rise up, ⓕ and let us go to war against her.” [1]

Look, I will make you insignificant ⓖ among the nations; you will be deeply despised.

Your arrogant heart has deceived you, ⓗ you who live in clefts of the rock [2] [3] ⓘ in your home on the heights, who say to yourself, “Who can bring me down to the ground?” ⓙ

Though you seem to soar [4] like an eagle ⓚ and make your nest among the stars, ⓛ even from there I will bring you down. This is the LORD’s declaration.

If thieves came to you, ⓜ if marauders by night — how ravaged you would be! — wouldn’t they steal only what they wanted? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn’t they leave some grapes? ⓝ

How Esau will be pillaged, ⓐ his hidden treasures searched out! ⓑ

Everyone who has a treaty with you ⓒ will drive you to the border; everyone at peace with you will deceive and conquer you. Those who eat your bread ⓓ will set [5] a trap for you. He will be unaware of it. ⓔ

In that day — this is the LORD’s declaration — will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom ⓕ and those who understand from the hill country of Esau?

Teman, [6] ⓖ your warriors ⓗ will be terrified so that everyone from the hill country of Esau will be destroyed by slaughter. ⓘ

Causes of the Judgment on Edom

You will be covered with shame and destroyed forever because of violence done to your brother Jacob. ⓙ

On the day you stood aloof, ⓚ on the day strangers captured his wealth, [7] while foreigners entered his city gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, ⓛ you were just like one of them. ⓜ

Do not [8] gloat over your brother ⓝ in the day of his calamity; do not rejoice over the people of Judah ⓐ in the day of their destruction; do not boastfully mock [9] ⓑ in the day of distress. ⓒ

Do not enter my people’s city gate in the day of their disaster. ⓓ Yes, you — do not gloat over their misery in the day of their disaster, and do not appropriate their possessions ⓔ in the day of their disaster.

Do not stand at the crossroads [10] ⓕ to cut off their fugitives, and do not hand over their survivors in the day of distress.

Results of the Judgment on Edom

For the day of the LORD ⓖ is near, against all the nations. ⓗ As you have done, ⓘ it will be done to you; what you deserve will return on your own head. ⓙ

As you have drunk on my holy mountain, ⓚ so all the nations will drink continually. ⓛ They will drink and gulp down and be as though they had never been.

But there will be a deliverance on Mount Zion, ⓜ and it will be holy; ⓝ the house of Jacob will dispossess ⓐ those who dispossessed them. [11] ⓑ

Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, ⓒ and the house of Joseph, a burning flame, but the house of Esau will be stubble; Jacob [12] will set them on fire and consume Edom. [13] Therefore no survivor will remain ⓓ of the house of Esau, for the LORD has spoken.

Possession of Edom by Israel

People from the Negev will possess ⓔ the hill country of Esau; ⓕ those from the Judean foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. ⓖ They [14] will possess the territories of Ephraim and Samaria, ⓗ while Benjamin will possess Gilead.

The exiles of the Israelites who are in Halah [15] and who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath ⓘ as well as the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev. ⓙ

Saviors [16] will ascend Mount Zion ⓚ to rule over the hill country of Esau, but the kingdom will be the LORD’s. ⓛ
