The Decline of King David
1 והמלך Now king דוד David זקן was old בא stricken בימים in years; ויכסהו and they covered בבגדים him with clothes, ולא but he got no heat. יחם׃ but he got no heat.
2 ויאמרו said לו עבדיו Wherefore his servants יבקשׁו unto him, Let there be sought לאדני for my lord המלך the king נערה a young בתולה virgin: ועמדה and let her stand לפני before המלך the king, ותהי לו סכנת and let her cherish ושׁכבה him, and let her lie בחיקך in thy bosom, וחם may get heat. לאדני that my lord המלך׃ the king
3 ויבקשׁו So they sought נערה damsel יפה for a fair בכל throughout all גבול the coasts ישׂראל of Israel, וימצאו and found את אבישׁג Abishag השׁונמית a Shunammite, ויבאו and brought אתה למלך׃ her to the king.
4 והנערה And the damsel יפה fair, עד very מאד very ותהי למלך the king, סכנת and cherished ותשׁרתהו and ministered והמלך to him: but the king לא her not. ידעה׃ knew
Adonijah Exalts Himself to Be King
5 ואדניה Then Adonijah בן the son חגית of Haggith מתנשׂא לאמר saying, אני I אמלך will be king: ויעשׂ and he prepared לו רכב him chariots ופרשׁים and horsemen, וחמשׁים and fifty אישׁ men רצים to run לפניו׃ before
6 ולא had not עצבו displeased אביו And his father מימיו him at any time לאמר in saying, מדוע Why ככה so? עשׂית hast thou done וגם also הוא and he טוב goodly תאר goodly מאד very ואתו ילדה and bore אחרי him after אבשׁלום׃ Absalom.
7 ויהיו דבריו And he conferred עם with יואב Joab בן the son צרויה of Zeruiah, ועם and with אביתר Abiathar הכהן the priest: ויעזרו helped אחרי and they following אדניה׃ Adonijah
8 וצדוק But Zadok הכהן the priest, ובניהו and Benaiah בן the son יהוידע of Jehoiada, ונתן and Nathan הנביא the prophet, ושׁמעי and Shimei, ורעי and Rei, והגבורים and the mighty men אשׁר which לדוד to David, לא not היו were עם with אדניהו׃ Adonijah.
9 ויזבח slew אדניהו And Adonijah צאן sheep ובקר and oxen ומריא and fat cattle עם by אבן the stone הזחלת of Zoheleth, אשׁר which אצל by עין רגל En-rogel, ויקרא and called את כל all אחיו his brethren בני sons, המלך the king's ולכל and all אנשׁי the men יהודה of Judah עבדי servants: המלך׃ the king's
10 ואת נתן But Nathan הנביא the prophet, ובניהו and Benaiah, ואת הגבורים and the mighty men, ואת שׁלמה and Solomon אחיו his brother, לא not. קרא׃ he called
11 ויאמר spoke נתן Wherefore Nathan אל unto בת־שׁבע Bath-sheba אם the mother שׁלמה of Solomon, לאמר saying, הלוא Hast thou not שׁמעת heard כי that מלך doth reign, אדניהו Adonijah בן the son חגית of Haggith ואדנינו our lord דוד and David לא not? ידע׃ knoweth
12 ועתה Now לכי therefore come, איעצך give נא let me, I pray thee, עצה thee counsel, ומלטי that thou mayest save את נפשׁך thine own life, ואת נפשׁ and the life בנך of thy son שׁלמה׃ Solomon.
13 לכי Go ובאי and get thee in אל unto המלך king דוד David, ואמרת and say אליו unto הלא him, Didst not אתה thou, אדני my lord, המלך O king, נשׁבעת swear לאמתך unto thine handmaid, לאמר saying, כי Assuredly שׁלמה Solomon בנך thy son ימלך shall reign אחרי after והוא me, and he ישׁב shall sit על upon כסאי my throne? ומדוע why מלך reign? אדניהו׃ then doth Adonijah
14 הנה Behold, עודך while thou yet מדברת talkest שׁם there עם with המלך the king, ואני I אבוא also will come in אחריך after ומלאתי thee, and confirm את דבריך׃ thy words.
15 ותבא went in בת־שׁבע And Bath-sheba אל unto המלך the king החדרה into the chamber: והמלך and the king זקן old; מאד was very ואבישׁג and Abishag השׁונמית the Shunammite משׁרת ministered unto את המלך׃ the king.
16 ותקד bowed, בת־שׁבע And Bath-sheba ותשׁתחו and did obeisance למלך unto the king. ויאמר said, המלך And the king מה׃ What
17 ותאמר And she said לו אדני unto him, My lord, אתה thou נשׁבעת swarest ביהוה by the LORD אלהיך thy God לאמתך unto thine handmaid, כי Assuredly שׁלמה Solomon בנך thy son ימלך shall reign אחרי after והוא me, and he ישׁב shall sit על upon כסאי׃ my throne.
18 ועתה And now, הנה behold, אדניה Adonijah מלך reigneth; ועתה and now, אדני my lord המלך the king, לא not: ידעת׃ thou knowest
19 ויזבח And he hath slain שׁור oxen ומריא and fat cattle וצאן and sheep לרב in abundance, ויקרא and hath called לכל all בני the sons המלך of the king, ולאביתר and Abiathar הכהן the priest, וליאב and Joab שׂר the captain הצבא of the host: ולשׁלמה but Solomon עבדך thy servant לא hath he not קרא׃ called.
20 ואתה And thou, אדני my lord, המלך O king, עיני the eyes כל of all ישׂראל Israel עליך upon להגיד thee, that thou shouldest tell להם מי them who ישׁב shall sit על on כסא the throne אדני of my lord המלך the king אחריו׃ after
21 והיה Otherwise it shall come to pass, כשׁכב shall sleep אדני when my lord המלך the king עם with אבתיו his fathers, והייתי shall be counted אני that I ובני and my son שׁלמה Solomon חטאים׃ offenders.
22 והנה And, lo, עודנה while she yet מדברת talked עם with המלך the king, ונתן Nathan הנביא the prophet בא׃ also came in.
23 ויגידו And they told למלך the king, לאמר saying, הנה Behold נתן Nathan הנביא the prophet. ויבא And when he was come in לפני before המלך the king, וישׁתחו he bowed himself למלך before the king על with אפיו his face ארצה׃ to the ground.
24 ויאמר said, נתן And Nathan אדני My lord, המלך O king, אתה hast thou אמרת said, אדניהו Adonijah ימלך shall reign אחרי after והוא me, and he ישׁב shall sit על upon כסאי׃ my throne?
25 כי For ירד he is gone down היום this day, ויזבח and hath slain שׁור oxen ומריא and fat cattle וצאן and sheep לרב in abundance, ויקרא and hath called לכל all בני sons, המלך the king's ולשׂרי and the captains הצבא of the host, ולאביתר and Abiathar הכהן the priest; והנם and, behold, אכלים they eat ושׁתים and drink לפניו before ויאמרו him, and say, יחי God save המלך king אדניהו׃ Adonijah.
26 ולי אני But me, me עבדך thy servant, ולצדק and Zadok הכהן the priest, ולבניהו and Benaiah בן the son יהוידע of Jehoiada, ולשׁלמה Solomon, עבדך and thy servant לא hath he not קרא׃ called.
27 אם מאתדני my lord המלך the king, נהיה done הדבר thing הזה Is this ולא and thou hast not הודעת showed unto את עבדיך thy servant, מי who ישׁב should sit על on כסא the throne אדני of my lord המלך the king אחריו׃ after
28 ויען answered המלך Then king דוד David ויאמר and said, קראו Call לי לבת־שׁבע me Bath-sheba. ותבא And she came into לפני presence, המלך the king's ותעמד and stood לפני before המלך׃ the king.
29 וישׁבע swore, המלך And the king ויאמר and said, חי liveth, יהוה the LORD אשׁר that פדה hath redeemed את נפשׁי my soul מכל out of all צרה׃ distress,
30 כי Even כאשׁר as נשׁבעתי I swore לך ביהוה unto thee by the LORD אלהי God ישׂראל of Israel, לאמר saying, כי Assuredly שׁלמה Solomon בנך thy son ימלך shall reign אחרי after והוא me, and he ישׁב shall sit על upon כסאי my throne תחתי in my stead; כי even כן so אעשׂה will I certainly do היום day. הזה׃ this
31 ותקד bowed בת־שׁבע Then Bath-sheba אפים with face ארץ to the earth, ותשׁתחו and did reverence למלך to the king, ותאמר and said, יחי live אדני Let my lord המלך king דוד David לעלם׃ forever.
32 ויאמר said, המלך And king דוד David קראו Call לי לצדוק me Zadok הכהן the priest, ולנתן and Nathan הנביא the prophet, ולבניהו and Benaiah בן the son יהוידע of Jehoiada. ויבאו And they came לפני before המלך׃ the king.
33 ויאמר also said המלך The king להם קחו unto them, Take עמכם with את עבדי you the servants אדניכם of your lord, והרכבתם to ride את שׁלמה and cause Solomon בני my son על upon הפרדה mine own mule, אשׁר לי והורדתםתו אל to גחון׃ Gihon:
34 ומשׁח anoint אתו שׁם him there צדוק And let Zadok הכהן the priest ונתן and Nathan הנביא the prophet למלך king על over ישׂראל Israel: ותקעתם and blow בשׁופר ye with the trumpet, ואמרתם and say, יחי God save המלך king שׁלמה׃ Solomon.
35 ועליתם Then ye shall come up אחריו after ובא him, that he may come וישׁב and sit על upon כסאי my throne; והוא for he ימלך shall be king תחתי in my stead: ואתו צויתי and I have appointed להיות him to be נגיד ruler על over ישׂראל Israel ועל and over יהודה׃ Judah.
36 ויען answered בניהו And Benaiah בן the son יהוידע of Jehoiada את המלך the king, ויאמר and said, אמן Amen: כן so יאמר say יהוה the LORD אלהי God אדני of my lord המלך׃ the king
37 כאשׁר As היה hath been יהוה the LORD עם with אדני my lord המלך the king, כן even so יהי be עם he with שׁלמה Solomon, ויגדל אתסאו than the throne מכסא אדני of my lord המלך king דוד׃ David.
38 וירד went down, צדוק So Zadok הכהן the priest, ונתן and Nathan הנביא the prophet, ובניהו and Benaiah בן the son יהוידע of Jehoiada, והכרתי והפלתי and the Pelethites, וירכבו to ride את שׁלמה and caused Solomon על upon פרדת mule, המלך king דוד David's וילכו and brought אתו על him to גחון׃ Gihon.
39 ויקח took צדוק And Zadok הכהן the priest את קרן a horn השׁמן of oil מן out of האהל the tabernacle, וימשׁח and anointed את שׁלמה Solomon. ויתקעו And they blew בשׁופר the trumpet; ויאמרו said, כל and all העם the people יחי God save המלך king שׁלמה׃ Solomon.
40 ויעלו came up כל And all העם the people אחריו after והעם him, and the people מחללים piped בחללים with pipes, ושׂמחים and rejoiced שׂמחה joy, גדולה with great ותבקע rent הארץ so that the earth בקולם׃ with the sound
Adonijah Submits to Solomon
41 וישׁמע him heard אדניהו And Adonijah וכל and all הקראים the guests אשׁר that אתו with והם as they כלו had made an end לאכל of eating. וישׁמע heard יואב And when Joab את קול the sound השׁופר of the trumpet, ויאמר he said, מדוע Wherefore קול noise הקריה of the city הומה׃ being in an uproar?
42 עודנו And while he yet מדבר spoke, והנה behold, יונתן Jonathan בן the son אביתר of Abiathar הכהן the priest בא came: ויאמר said אדניהו and Adonijah בא unto him, Come in; כי for אישׁ man, חיל a valiant אתה thou וטוב and bringest good tidings. תבשׂר׃ and bringest good tidings.
43 ויען answered יונתן And Jonathan ויאמר and said לאדניהו to Adonijah, אבל Verily אדנינו our lord המלך king דוד David המליך אתׁלמה׃
44 וישׁלח hath sent אתו with המלך And the king את צדוק him Zadok הכהן the priest, ואת נתן and Nathan הנביא the prophet, ובניהו and Benaiah בן the son יהוידע of Jehoiada, והכרתי and the Cherethites, והפלתי and the Pelethites, וירכבו אתול upon פרדת mule: המלך׃ the king's
45 וימשׁחו have anointed אתו צדוק And Zadok הכהן the priest ונתן and Nathan הנביא the prophet למלך him king בגחון in Gihon: ויעלו and they are come up משׁם from thence שׂמחים rejoicing, ותהם rang הקריה so that the city הוא again. This הקול the noise אשׁר that שׁמעתם׃ ye have heard.
46 וגם And also ישׁב sitteth שׁלמה Solomon על on כסא the throne המלוכה׃ of the kingdom.
47 וגם And moreover באו came עבדי servants המלך the king's לברך to bless את אדנינו our lord המלך king דוד David, לאמר saying, ייטב better אלהיך God את שׁם make the name שׁלמה of Solomon משׁמך than thy name, ויגדל greater את כסאו and make his throne מכסאך than thy throne. וישׁתחו bowed himself המלך And the king על upon המשׁכב׃ the bed.
48 וגם And also ככה thus אמר said המלך the king, ברוך Blessed יהוה the LORD אלהי God ישׂראל of Israel, אשׁר which נתן hath given היום this day, ישׁב to sit על on כסאי my throne ועיני mine eyes ראות׃ even seeing
49 ויחרדו were afraid, ויקמו and rose up, כל And all הקראים the guests אשׁר that לאדניהו with Adonijah וילכו and went אישׁ every man לדרכו׃ his way.
50 ואדניהו And Adonijah ירא feared מפני because שׁלמה of Solomon, ויקם and arose, וילך and went, ויחזק and caught hold בקרנות on the horns המזבח׃ of the altar.
51 ויגד And it was told לשׁלמה Solomon, לאמר saying, הנה Behold, אדניהו Adonijah ירא feareth את המלך king שׁלמה Solomon: והנה for, lo, אחז he hath caught hold בקרנות on the horns המזבח of the altar, לאמר saying, ישׁבע swear לי כיום unto me today המלך Let king שׁלמה Solomon אם that he will not ימית slay את עבדו his servant בחרב׃ with the sword.
52 ויאמר said, שׁלמה And Solomon אם If יהיה he will show לבן man, חיל himself a worthy לא there shall not יפל him fall משׂערתו ארצה to the earth: ואם but if רעה wickedness תמצא shall be found בו ומת׃ in him, he shall die.
53 וישׁלח sent, המלך So king שׁלמה Solomon וירדהו and they brought him down מעל from המזבח the altar. ויבא And he came וישׁתחו and bowed himself למלך to king שׁלמה Solomon: ויאמר said לו שׁלמה and Solomon לך unto him, Go לביתך׃ to thine house.
