1 ויהי Now there was אישׁ man אחד a certain מן of הרמתים צופים Ramathaim-zophim, מהר of mount אפרים Ephraim, ושׁמו and his name אלקנה Elkanah, בן the son ירחם of Jeroham, בן the son אליהוא of Elihu, בן the son תחו of Tohu, בן the son צוף of Zuph, אפרתי׃ an Ephrathite.
2 ולו שׁתי And he had two נשׁים wives; שׁם the name אחת of the one חנה Hannah, ושׁם and the name השׁנית of the other פננה Peninnah: ויהי had לפננה and Peninnah ילדים children, ולחנה but Hannah אין had no ילדים׃ children.
3 ועלה went up האישׁ man ההוא And this מעירו out of his city מימים ימימההשׁתחות to worship ולזבח and to sacrifice ליהוה unto the LORD צבאות of hosts בשׁלה in Shiloh. ושׁם there. שׁני And the two בני sons עלי of Eli, חפני Hophni ופנחס and Phinehas, כהנים the priests ליהוה׃ of the LORD,
4 ויהי was היום And when the time ויזבח offered, אלקנה that Elkanah ונתן he gave לפננה to Peninnah אשׁתו his wife, ולכל and to all בניה her sons ובנותיה and her daughters, מנות׃ portions:
5 ולחנה But unto Hannah יתן he gave מנה portion; אחת a אפים worthy כי for את חנה Hannah: אהב he loved ויהוה but the LORD סגר had shut up רחמה׃ her womb.
6 וכעסתה provoked צרתה And her adversary גם also כעס her sore, בעבור for to הרעמה make her fret, כי because סגר had shut up יהוה the LORD בעד had shut up רחמה׃ her womb.
7 וכן so יעשׂה And he did שׁנה year בשׁנה by year, מדי when עלתה she went up בבית to the house יהוה of the LORD, כן so תכעסנה she provoked ותבכה her; therefore she wept, ולא and did not תאכל׃ eat.
8 ויאמר Then said לה אלקנה Elkanah אישׁה her husband חנה to her, Hannah, למה why תבכי weepest ולמה thou? and why לא thou not? תאכלי eatest ולמה and why ירע לבבך is thy heart הלוא not אנכי I טוב better לך מעשׂרה to thee than ten בנים׃ sons?
9 ותקם rose up חנה So Hannah אחרי after אכלה they had eaten בשׁלה in Shiloh, ואחרי and after שׁתה they had drunk. ועלי Now Eli הכהן the priest ישׁב sat על upon הכסא a seat על by מזוזת a post היכל of the temple יהוה׃ of the LORD.
10 והיא And she מרת in bitterness נפשׁ of soul, ותתפלל and prayed על unto יהוה the LORD, ובכה and wept sore. תבכה׃ and wept sore.
11 ותדר And she vowed נדר a vow, ותאמר and said, יהוה O LORD צבאות of hosts, אם if ראה thou wilt indeed look תראה thou wilt indeed look בעני on the affliction אמתך of thine handmaid, וזכרתני and remember ולא me, and not תשׁכח forget את אמתך thine handmaid, ונתתה but wilt give לאמתך unto thine handmaid זרע child, אנשׁים a man ונתתיו then I will give ליהוה him unto the LORD כל all ימי the days חייו of his life, ומורה razor לא and there shall no יעלה come על upon ראשׁו׃ his head.
12 והיה And it came to pass, כי as הרבתה she continued להתפלל praying לפני before יהוה the LORD, ועלי that Eli שׁמר marked את פיה׃ her mouth.
13 וחנה Now Hannah, היא she מדברת spoke על in לבה her heart; רק only שׂפתיה her lips נעות moved, וקולה but her voice לא was not ישׁמע heard: ויחשׁבה thought עלי therefore Eli לשׁכרה׃ she had been drunken.
14 ויאמר said אליה unto עלי And Eli עד her, How מתי long תשׁתכרין wilt thou be drunken? הסירי put away את יינך thy wine מעליך׃ from
15 ותען answered חנה And Hannah ותאמר and said, לא No, אדני my lord, אשׁה I a woman קשׁת of a sorrowful רוח spirit: אנכי I ויין wine ושׁכר nor strong drink, לא neither שׁתיתי have drunk ואשׁפך but have poured out את נפשׁי my soul לפני before יהוה׃ the LORD.
16 אל not תתן Count את אמתך thine handmaid לפני for בת בליעלי for מרב out of the abundance שׂיחי of my complaint וכעסי and grief דברתי have I spoken עד hitherto. הנה׃
17 ויען answered עלי Then Eli ויאמר and said, לכי Go לשׁלום in peace: ואלהי and the God ישׂראל of Israel יתן grant את שׁלתך thy petition אשׁר that שׁאלת thou hast asked מעמו׃ of
18 ותאמר And she said, תמצא find שׁפחתך Let thine handmaid חן grace בעיניך in thy sight. ותלך went האשׁה So the woman לדרכה her way, ותאכל and did eat, ופניה and her countenance לא no היו was לה עוד׃ more
19 וישׁכמו בבקרישׁתחוו and worshiped לפני before יהוה the LORD, וישׁבו and returned, ויבאו and came אל to ביתם their house הרמתה to Ramah: וידע knew אלקנה and Elkanah את חנה Hannah אשׁתו his wife; ויזכרה remembered יהוה׃ and the LORD
20 ויהי Wherefore it came to pass, לתקפות was come הימים when the time ותהר had conceived, חנה about after Hannah ותלד that she bore בן a son, ותקרא and called את שׁמו his name שׁמואל Samuel, כי Because מיהוה שׁאלתיו׃ I have asked
21 ויעל went up האישׁ And the man אלקנה Elkanah, וכל and all ביתו his house, לזבח to offer ליהוה unto the LORD את זבח sacrifice, הימים the yearly ואת נדרו׃ and his vow.
22 וחנה But Hannah לא went not up; עלתה went not up; כי for אמרה she said לאישׁה unto her husband, עד until יגמל be weaned, הנער the child והבאתיו and I will bring ונראה him, that he may appear את פני before יהוה the LORD, וישׁב abide שׁם and there עד forever. עולם׃ forever.
23 ויאמר said לה אלקנה And Elkanah אישׁה her husband עשׂי unto her, Do הטוב thee good; בעיניך what seemeth שׁבי tarry עד until גמלך thou have weaned אתו אך him; only יקם establish יהוה the LORD את דברו his word. ותשׁב abode, האשׁה So the woman ותינק אתנה עד until גמלה she weaned אתו׃
24 ותעלהו him, she took him up עמה with כאשׁר And when גמלתו she had weaned בפרים bullocks, שׁלשׁה her, with three ואיפה ephah אחת and one קמח of flour, ונבל and a bottle יין of wine, ותבאהו and brought בית him unto the house יהוה of the LORD שׁלו in Shiloh: והנער and the child נער׃ young.
25 וישׁחטו And they slew את הפר a bullock, ויביאו and brought את הנער the child אל to עלי׃ Eli.
26 ותאמר And she said, בי Oh אדני my lord, חי liveth, נפשׁך thy soul אדני my lord, אני I האשׁה the woman הנצבת that stood עמכה by בזה thee here, להתפלל praying אל unto יהוה׃ the LORD.
27 אל For הנער child הזה this התפללתי I prayed; ויתן hath given יהוה and the LORD לי את שׁאלתי me my petition אשׁר which שׁאלתי I asked מעמו׃ of
28 וגם Therefore also אנכי I השׁאלתהו have lent ליהוה him to the LORD; כל as long הימים he liveth אשׁר as היה shall be הוא he שׁאול lent ליהוה to the LORD. וישׁתחו And he worshiped שׁם there. ליהוה׃ the LORD
