1 ויהי Now it came to pass אחרי after מות שׁאול of Saul, ודוד when David שׁב was returned מהכות from the slaughter את העמלק of the Amalekites, וישׁב had abode דוד and David בצקלג in Ziklag; ימים days שׁנים׃ two
2 ויהי It came even to pass ביום day, השׁלישׁי on the third והנה that, behold, אישׁ a man בא came מן out of המחנה the camp מעם from שׁאול Saul ובגדיו with his clothes קרעים rent, ואדמה and earth על upon ראשׁו his head: ויהי and it was, בבאו when he came אל to דוד David, ויפל that he fell ארצה to the earth, וישׁתחו׃ and did obeisance.
3 ויאמר said לו דוד And David אי מזהבוא comest ויאמר thou? And he said אליו unto ממחנה ישׂראל of Israel נמלטתי׃ am I escaped.
4 ויאמר said אליו unto דוד And David מה him, How היה went הדבר the matter? הגד tell נא I pray thee, לי ויאמר me. And he answered, אשׁר That נס are fled העם the people מן from המלחמה the battle, וגם also הרבה and many נפל are fallen מן of העם the people וימתו and dead; וגם also. שׁאול and Saul ויהונתן and Jonathan בנו his son מתו׃ are dead
5 ויאמר said דוד And David אל unto הנער the young man המגיד that told לו איך him, How ידעת knowest כי thou that מת be dead? שׁאול Saul ויהונתן and Jonathan בנו׃ his son
6 ויאמר him said, הנער And the young man המגיד that told לו נקרא by chance נקריתי As I happened בהר upon mount הגלבע Gilboa, והנה behold, שׁאול Saul נשׁען leaned על upon חניתו his spear; והנה and, lo, הרכב the chariots ובעלי and horsemen הפרשׁים and horsemen הדבקהו׃ followed hard
7 ויפן And when he looked אחריו behind ויראני him, he saw ויקרא me, and called אלי unto ואמר me. And I answered, הנני׃
8 ויאמר And he said לי מי unto me, Who אתה thou? ויאמר And I answered אליו him, עמלקי an Amalekite. אנכי׃ I
9 ויאמר He said אלי unto עמד me again, Stand, נא I pray thee, עלי upon ומתתני me, and slay כי me: for אחזני is come השׁבץ anguish כי upon me, because כל whole עוד yet נפשׁי׃ my life
10 ואעמד So I stood עליו upon ואמתתהו him, and slew כי him, because ידעתי I was sure כי that לא he could not יחיה live אחרי after that נפלו he was fallen: ואקח and I took הנזר the crown אשׁר that על upon ראשׁו his head, ואצעדה and the bracelet אשׁר that על on זרעו his arm, ואביאם and have brought אל unto אדני my lord. הנה׃ them hither
11 ויחזק took hold דוד Then David בבגדו on his clothes, ויקרעם and rent וגם them; and likewise כל all האנשׁים the men אשׁר that אתו׃ with
12 ויספדו And they mourned, ויבכו and wept, ויצמו and fasted עד until הערב even, על for שׁאול Saul, ועל and for יהונתן Jonathan בנו his son, ועל and for עם the people יהוה ועל and for בית the house ישׂראל of Israel; כי because נפלו they were fallen בחרב׃ by the sword.
13 ויאמר said דוד And David אל unto הנער the young man המגיד that told לו אי מזהתה thou? ויאמר And he answered, בן the son אישׁ of a stranger, גר of a stranger, עמלקי an Amalekite. אנכי׃ I
14 ויאמר said אליו unto דוד And David איך him, How לא wast thou not יראת afraid לשׁלח to stretch forth ידך thine hand לשׁחת to destroy את משׁיח anointed? יהוה׃ the LORD's
15 ויקרא called דוד And David לאחד one מהנערים of the young men, ויאמר and said, גשׁ Go near, פגע fall בו ויכהו upon him. And he smote וימת׃ him that he died.
16 ויאמר said אליו unto דוד And David דמיך him, Thy blood על upon ראשׁך thy head; כי for פיך thy mouth ענה hath testified בך לאמר against thee, saying, אנכי I מתתי have slain את משׁיח anointed. יהוה׃ the LORD's
17 ויקנן lamented דוד And David את with הקינה lamentation הזאת this על over שׁאול Saul ועל and over יהונתן Jonathan בנו׃ his son:
18 ויאמר (Also he bade ללמד them teach בני the children יהודה of Judah קשׁת the bow: הנה behold, כתובה written על in ספר the book הישׁר׃ of Jasher.)
19 הצבי The beauty ישׂראל of Israel על upon במותיך thy high places: חלל is slain איך how נפלו fallen! גבורים׃ are the mighty
20 אל not תגידו Tell בגת in Gath, אל not תבשׂרו publish בחוצת in the streets אשׁקלון of Askelon; פן lest תשׂמחנה rejoice, בנות the daughters פלשׁתים of the Philistines פן lest תעלזנה triumph. בנות the daughters הערלים׃ of the uncircumcised
21 הרי Ye mountains בגלבע of Gilboa, אל no טל dew, ואל neither מטר rain, עליכם upon ושׂדי you, nor fields תרומת of offerings: כי for שׁם there נגעל is vilely cast away, מגן the shield גבורים of the mighty מגן the shield שׁאול of Saul, בלי not משׁיח בשׁמן׃ with oil.
22 מדם חללים of the slain, מחלב from the fat גבורים of the mighty, קשׁת the bow יהונתן of Jonathan לא not נשׂוג turned אחור back, וחרב and the sword שׁאול of Saul לא not תשׁוב returned ריקם׃ empty.
23 שׁאול Saul ויהונתן and Jonathan הנאהבים lovely והנעימם and pleasant בחייהם in their lives, ובמותם and in their death לא they were not נפרדו divided: מנשׁרים than eagles, קלו they were swifter מאריות than lions. גברו׃ they were stronger
24 בנות Ye daughters ישׂראל of Israel, אל over שׁאול Saul, בכינה weep המלבשׁכם who clothed שׁני you in scarlet, עם with עדנים delights, המעלה who put on עדי ornaments זהב of gold על upon לבושׁכן׃ your apparel.
25 איך How נפלו fallen גברים are the mighty בתוך in the midst המלחמה of the battle! יהונתן O Jonathan, על in במותיך thine high places. חלל׃ slain
26 צר I am distressed לי עליך for אחי thee, my brother יהונתן Jonathan: נעמת pleasant לי מאד very נפלאתה to me was wonderful, אהבתך hast thou been unto me: thy love לי מאהבת passing the love נשׁים׃ of women.
27 איך How נפלו fallen, גבורים are the mighty ויאבדו perished! כלי and the weapons מלחמה׃ of war
