1 אלה These הדברים the words אשׁר which דבר spoke משׁה Moses אל unto כל all ישׂראל Israel בעבר on this side הירדן Jordan במדבר in the wilderness, בערבה in the plain מול over against סוף the Red בין between פארן Paran, ובין תפל and Tophel, ולבן and Laban, וחצרת and Hazeroth, ודי זהב׃ and Dizahab.
2 אחד עשׂרום days מחרב דרך by the way הר of mount שׂעיר Seir עד unto קדשׁ ברנע׃ Kadesh-barnea.)
3 ויהי And it came to pass בארבעים in the fortieth שׁנה year, בעשׁתי in the eleventh עשׂר in the eleventh חדשׁ month, באחד on the first לחדשׁ of the month, דבר spoke משׁה Moses אל unto בני the children ישׂראל of Israel, ככל according unto all אשׁר that צוה יהוה the LORD אתו אלהם׃ unto
4 אחרי After הכתו he had slain את סיחן Sihon מלך the king האמרי of the Amorites, אשׁר which יושׁב dwelt בחשׁבון in Heshbon, ואת עוג and Og מלך the king הבשׁן of Bashan, אשׁר which יושׁב dwelt בעשׁתרת at Astaroth באדרעי׃ in Edrei:
5 בעבר On this side הירדן Jordan, בארץ in the land מואב of Moab, הואיל began משׁה Moses באר to declare את התורה law, הזאת this לאמר׃ saying,
From Mount Sinai to Kadesh
6 יהוה The LORD אלהינו our God דבר spoke אלינו unto בחרב us in Horeb, לאמר saying, רב long enough לכם שׁבת Ye have dwelt בהר mount: הזה׃ in this
7 פנו Turn וסעו you, and take your journey, לכם ובאו and go הר to the mount האמרי of the Amorites, ואל and unto כל all שׁכניו nigh בערבה thereunto, in the plain, בהר in the hills, ובשׁפלה and in the vale, ובנגב and in the south, ובחוף side, הים and by the sea ארץ to the land הכנעני of the Canaanites, והלבנון and unto Lebanon, עד unto הנהר river, הגדל the great נהר the river פרת׃ Euphrates.
8 ראה Behold, נתתי I have set לפניכם before את הארץ the land באו you: go in ורשׁו and possess את הארץ the land אשׁר which נשׁבע swore יהוה the LORD לאבתיכם unto your fathers, לאברהם Abraham, ליצחק Isaac, וליעקב and Jacob, לתת to give להם ולזרעם unto them and to their seed אחריהם׃ after
9 ואמר And I spoke אלכם unto בעת time, ההוא you at that לאמר saying, לא אוכלבדי you myself alone: שׂאת to bear אתכם׃
10 יהוה The LORD אלהיכם your God הרבה hath multiplied אתכם והנכם you, and, behold, היום ye this day ככוכבי as the stars השׁמים of heaven לרב׃ for multitude.
11 יהוה (The LORD אלהי God אבותכם of your fathers יסף so many more עליכם ככם אלף make you a thousand פעמים times ויברך as ye and bless אתכם כאשׁר you, as דבר׃ he hath promised
12 איכה How אשׂא bear לבדי can I myself alone טרחכם your encumbrance, ומשׂאכם and your burden, וריבכם׃ and your strife?
13 הבו Take לכם אנשׁים חכמים you wise ונבנים and understanding, וידעים and known לשׁבטיכם among your tribes, ואשׂימם and I will make בראשׁיכם׃ them rulers
14 ותענו And ye answered אתי ותאמרו me, and said, טוב good הדבר The thing אשׁר which דברת thou hast spoken לעשׂות׃ to do.
15 ואקח So I took את ראשׁי the chief שׁבטיכם of your tribes, אנשׁים men, חכמים wise וידעים and known, ואתן and made אותם ראשׁים them heads עליכם over שׂרי you, captains אלפים over thousands, ושׂרי and captains מאות over hundreds, ושׂרי and captains חמשׁים over fifties, ושׂרי and captains עשׂרת over tens, ושׁטרים and officers לשׁבטיכם׃ among your tribes.
16 ואצוה And I charged את שׁפטיכם your judges בעת time, ההוא at that לאמר saying, שׁמע Hear בין between אחיכם your brethren, ושׁפטתם and judge צדק righteously בין between אישׁ man ובין אחיו and his brother, ובין גרו׃ and the stranger
17 לא Ye shall not תכירו respect פנים persons במשׁפט in judgment; כקטן the small כגדל as well as the great; תשׁמעון ye shall hear לא ye shall not תגורו be afraid מפני of the face אישׁ of man; כי for המשׁפט the judgment לאלהים God's: הוא והדבר and the cause אשׁר that יקשׁה is too hard מכם of the face תקרבון you, bring אלי unto ושׁמעתיו׃ me, and I will hear
18 ואצוה And I commanded אתכם בעת time ההוא you at that את כל all הדברים the things אשׁר which תעשׂון׃ ye should do.
19 ונסע And when we departed מחרב ונלך we went through את כל all המדבר wilderness, הגדול great והנורא and terrible ההוא that אשׁר which ראיתם ye saw דרך by the way הר of the mountain האמרי of the Amorites, כאשׁר as צוה commanded יהוה the LORD אלהינו our God אתנו ונבא us; and we came עד to קדשׁ ברנע׃ Kadesh-barnea.
20 ואמר And I said אלכם unto באתם you, Ye are come עד unto הר the mountain האמרי of the Amorites, אשׁר which יהוה the LORD אלהינו our God נתן׃ doth give
21 ראה Behold, נתן hath set יהוה the LORD אלהיך thy God לפניך before את הארץ the land עלה thee: go up רשׁ possess כאשׁר as דבר hath said יהוה the LORD אלהי God אבתיך of thy fathers לך אל not, תירא unto thee; fear ואל neither תחת׃ be discouraged.
22 ותקרבון And ye came near אלי unto כלכם me every one ותאמרו of you, and said, נשׁלחה We will send אנשׁים men לפנינו before ויחפרו us, and they shall search us out לנו את הארץ the land, וישׁבו and bring אתנו דבר us word את הדרך way אשׁר again by what נעלה we must go up, בה ואת הערים cities אשׁר what נבא we shall come. אליהן׃ andinto
23 וייטב pleased me well: בעיני pleased me well: הדבר And the saying ואקח and I took מכם of שׁנים twelve עשׂר twelve אנשׁים אישׁ men אחד you, one לשׁבט׃ of a tribe:
24 ויפנו And they turned ויעלו and went up ההרה into the mountain, ויבאו and came עד unto נחל the valley אשׁכל of Eshcol, וירגלו אתה׃
25 ויקחו And they took בידם in their hands, מפרי of the fruit הארץ of the land ויורדו and brought down אלינו unto וישׁבו us, and brought אתנו דבר us word ויאמרו again, and said, טובה a good הארץ land אשׁר which יהוה the LORD אלהינו our God נתן׃ doth give
26 ולא not אביתם Notwithstanding ye would לעלת go up, ותמרו but rebelled against את פי the commandment יהוה of the LORD אלהיכם׃ your God:
27 ותרגנו And ye murmured באהליכם in your tents, ותאמרו and said, בשׂנאת יהוה Because the LORD אתנו הוציאנו us, he hath brought us forth מארץ out of the land מצרים of Egypt, לתת to deliver אתנו ביד us into the hand האמרי of the Amorites, להשׁמידנו׃ to destroy
28 אנה Whither אנחנו shall we עלים go up? אחינו our brethren המסו have discouraged את לבבנו our heart, לאמר saying, עם The people גדול greater ורם and taller ממנו than ערים we; the cities גדלת great ובצורת and walled בשׁמים up to heaven; וגם and moreover בני the sons ענקים of the Anakims ראינו we have seen שׁם׃ there.
29 ואמר Then I said אלכם unto לא not, תערצון you, Dread ולא neither תיראון be afraid מהם׃
30 יהוה The LORD אלהיכם your God ההלך which goeth לפניכם before הוא you, he ילחם shall fight לכם ככל for you, according to all אשׁר that עשׂה he did אתכם for במצרים you in Egypt לעיניכם׃ before your eyes;
31 ובמדבר And in the wilderness, אשׁר where ראית thou hast seen אשׁר how that נשׂאך bore יהוה the LORD אלהיך thy God כאשׁר thee, as ישׂא doth bear אישׁ a man את בנו his son, בכל in all הדרך the way אשׁר that הלכתם ye went, עד until באכם ye came עד into המקום place. הזה׃ this
32 ובדבר thing הזה Yet in this אינכם ye did not מאמינם believe ביהוה the LORD אלהיכם׃ your God,
33 ההלך Who went לפניכם before בדרך in the way לתור you, to search you out לכם מקום a place לחנתכם to pitch your tents באשׁ in fire לילה by night, לראתכם to show בדרך way אשׁר you by what תלכו ye should go, בה ובענן and in a cloud יומם׃ by day.
34 וישׁמע heard יהוה And the LORD את קול the voice דבריכם of your words, ויקצף and was wroth, וישׁבע and swore, לאמר׃ saying,
35 אם Surely יראה see אישׁ there shall not one באנשׁים men האלה of these הדור generation הרע evil הזה of this את הארץ land, הטובה that good אשׁר which נשׁבעתי I swore לתת to give לאבתיכם׃ unto your fathers,
36 זולתי Save כלב Caleb בן the son יפנה of Jephunneh; הוא he יראנה shall see ולו אתן it, and to him will I give את הארץ the land אשׁר that דרך he hath trodden בה ולבניו upon, and to his children, יען because אשׁר because מלא he hath wholly אחרי followed יהוה׃ the LORD.
37 גם Also בי התאנף was angry יהוה the LORD בגללכם with me for your sakes, לאמר saying, גם also אתה Thou לא shalt not תבא go in שׁם׃ thither.
38 יהושׁע Joshua בן the son נון of Nun, העמד which standeth לפניך before הוא thee, he יבא shall go in שׁמה thither: אתו חזק encourage כי him: for הוא he ינחלנה to inherit את ישׂראל׃ shall cause Israel
39 וטפכם Moreover your little ones, אשׁר which אמרתם ye said לבז a prey, יהיה should be ובניכם and your children, אשׁר which לא had no knowledge ידעו had no knowledge היום in that day טוב between good ורע and evil, המה they יבאו shall go in שׁמה thither, ולהם אתננה and unto them will I give והם it, and they יירשׁוה׃ shall possess
40 ואתם But you, פנו turn לכם וסעו you, and take your journey המדברה into the wilderness דרך by the way ים sea. סוף׃ of the Red
41 ותענו Then ye answered ותאמרו and said אלי unto חטאנו me, We have sinned ליהוה against the LORD, אנחנו we נעלה will go up ונלחמנו and fight, ככל according to all אשׁר that צונו commanded יהוה the LORD אלהינו our God ותחגרו us. And when ye had girded on אישׁ every man את כלי his weapons מלחמתו of war, ותהינו ye were ready לעלת to go up ההרה׃ into the hill.
42 ויאמר said יהוה And the LORD אלי unto אמר me, Say להם לא neither תעלו ולא you; lest תלחמו fight; כי for אינני I not בקרבכם among ולא תנגפו ye be smitten לפני before איביכם׃ your enemies.
43 ואדבר So I spoke אליכם unto ולא you; and ye would not שׁמעתם hear, ותמרו but rebelled against את פי the commandment יהוה of the LORD, ותזדו and went presumptuously up ותעלו and went presumptuously up ההרה׃ into the hill.
44 ויצא came out האמרי And the Amorites, הישׁב which dwelt בהר mountain, ההוא in that לקראתכם against וירדפו you, and chased אתכם כאשׁר you, as תעשׂינה do, הדברים bees ויכתו and destroyed אתכם בשׂעיר you in Seir, עד unto חרמה׃ Hormah.
45 ותשׁבו And ye returned ותבכו and wept לפני before יהוה the LORD; ולא would not שׁמע hearken יהוה but the LORD בקלכם to your voice, ולא nor האזין give ear אליכם׃ unto
46 ותשׁבו So ye abode בקדשׁ in Kadesh ימים days, רבים many כימים according unto the days אשׁר that ישׁבתם׃ ye abode
