The Creation of the World
1 בראשׁית In the beginning ברא created אלהים God את השׁמים the heaven ואת הארץ׃ and the earth.
2 והארץ And the earth היתה was תהו without form, ובהו and void; וחשׁך and darkness על upon פני the face תהום of the deep. ורוח And the Spirit אלהים of God מרחפת moved על upon פני the face המים׃ of the waters.
3 ויאמר said, אלהים And God יהי Let there be אור light: ויהי and there was אור׃ light.
4 וירא saw אלהים And God את האור the light, כי that טוב good: ויבדל divided אלהים and God בין divided האור the light ובין from החשׁך׃ the darkness.
5 ויקרא called אלהים And God לאור the light יום Day, ולחשׁך and the darkness קרא he called לילה Night. ויהי were ערב And the evening ויהי בקר and the morning יום day. אחד׃ the first
6 ויאמר said, אלהים And God יהי Let there be רקיע a firmament בתוך in the midst המים of the waters, ויהי and let מבדיל it divide בין it divide מים the waters למים׃ from the waters.
7 ויעשׂ made אלהים And God את הרקיע the firmament, ויבדל and divided בין and divided המים the waters אשׁר which מתחת under לרקיע the firmament ובין from המים the waters אשׁר which מעל above לרקיע the firmament: ויהי and it was כן׃ so.
8 ויקרא called אלהים And God לרקיע the firmament שׁמים Heaven. ויהי were ערב And the evening ויהי בקר and the morning יום day. שׁני׃ the second
9 ויאמר said, אלהים And God יקוו be gathered together המים Let the waters מתחת under השׁמים the heaven אל unto מקום place, אחד one ותראה appear: היבשׁה and let the dry ויהי and it was כן׃ so.
10 ויקרא called אלהים And God ליבשׁה the dry ארץ Earth; ולמקוה and the gathering together המים of the waters קרא called ימים he Seas: וירא saw אלהים and God כי that טוב׃ good.
11 ויאמר said, אלהים And God תדשׁא bring forth הארץ Let the earth דשׁא grass, עשׂב the herb מזריע yielding זרע seed, עץ tree פרי the fruit עשׂה yielding פרי fruit למינו after his kind, אשׁר whose זרעו seed בו על in itself, upon הארץ the earth: ויהי and it was כן׃ so.
12 ותוצא brought forth הארץ And the earth דשׁא grass, עשׂב herb מזריע yielding זרע seed למינהו after his kind, ועץ and the tree עשׂה yielding פרי fruit, אשׁר whose זרעו seed בו למינהו in itself, after his kind: וירא saw אלהים and God כי that טוב׃ good.
13 ויהי were ערב And the evening ויהי בקר and the morning יום day. שׁלישׁי׃ the third
14 ויאמר said, אלהים And God יהי Let there be מארת lights ברקיע in the firmament השׁמים of the heaven להבדיל to divide בין to divide היום the day ובין from הלילה the night; והיו and let them be לאתת for signs, ולמועדים and for seasons, ולימים and for days, ושׁנים׃ and years:
15 והיו And let them be למאורת ברקיע in the firmament השׁמים of the heaven להאיר to give light על upon הארץ the earth: ויהי and it was כן׃ so.
16 ויעשׂ made אלהים And God את שׁני two המארת lights; הגדלים great את המאור light הגדל the greater לממשׁלת to rule היום the day, ואת המאור light הקטן and the lesser לממשׁלת to rule הלילה the night: ואת הכוכבים׃ the stars
17 ויתן set אתם אלהים And God ברקיע them in the firmament השׁמים of the heaven להאיר to give light על upon הארץ׃ the earth,
18 ולמשׁל And to rule ביום over the day ובלילה and over the night, ולהבדיל and to divide בין and to divide האור the light ובין from החשׁך the darkness: וירא saw אלהים and God כי that טוב׃ good.
19 ויהי were ערב And the evening ויהי בקר and the morning יום day. רביעי׃ the fourth
20 ויאמר said, אלהים And God ישׁרצו bring forth abundantly המים Let the waters שׁרץ the moving creature נפשׁ that hath life, חיה that hath life, ועוף and fowl יעופף may fly על above הארץ the earth על in פני the open רקיע firmament השׁמים׃ of heaven.
21 ויברא created אלהים And God את התנינם whales, הגדלים great ואת כל and every נפשׁ creature החיה living הרמשׂת that moveth, אשׁר which שׁרצו brought forth abundantly, המים the waters למינהם after their kind, ואת כל and every עוף fowl כנף winged למינהו after his kind: וירא saw אלהים and God כי that טוב׃ good.
22 ויברך blessed אתם אלהים And God לאמר them, saying, פרו Be fruitful, ורבו and multiply, ומלאו and fill את המים the waters בימים in the seas, והעוף and let fowl ירב multiply בארץ׃ in the earth.
23 ויהי were ערב And the evening ויהי בקר and the morning יום day. חמישׁי׃ the fifth
24 ויאמר said, אלהים And God תוצא bring forth הארץ Let the earth נפשׁ creature חיה the living למינה after his kind, בהמה cattle, ורמשׂ and creeping thing, וחיתו and beast ארץ of the earth למינה after his kind: ויהי and it was כן׃ so.
25 ויעשׂ made אלהים And God את חית the beast הארץ of the earth למינה after his kind, ואת הבהמה and cattle למינה after their kind, ואת כל and every thing רמשׂ that creepeth האדמה upon the earth למינהו after his kind: וירא saw אלהים and God כי that טוב׃ good.
26 ויאמר said, אלהים And God נעשׂה Let us make אדם man בצלמנו in our image, כדמותנו after our likeness: וירדו and let them have dominion בדגת over the fish הים of the sea, ובעוף and over the fowl השׁמים of the air, ובבהמה and over the cattle, ובכל and over all הארץ the earth, ובכל and over every הרמשׂ creeping thing הרמשׂ that creepeth על upon הארץ׃ the earth.
27 ויברא created אלהים So God את האדם man בצלמו in his image, בצלם in the image אלהים of God ברא created אתו זכר he him; male ונקבה and female ברא created אתם׃
28 ויברך blessed אתם אלהים And God ויאמר said להם אלהים them, and God פרו unto them, Be fruitful, ורבו and multiply, ומלאו and replenish את הארץ the earth, וכבשׁה and subdue ורדו it: and have dominion בדגת over the fish הים of the sea, ובעוף and over the fowl השׁמים of the air, ובכל and over every חיה living thing הרמשׂת that moveth על upon הארץ׃ the earth.
29 ויאמר said, אלהים And God הנה Behold, נתתי I have given לכם את כל you every עשׂב herb זרע bearing זרע seed, אשׁר which על upon פני the face כל of all הארץ the earth, ואת כל and every העץ tree, אשׁר in the which בו פרי the fruit עץ of a tree זרע yielding זרע seed; לכם יהיה to you it shall be לאכלה׃ for meat.
30 ולכל And to every חית beast הארץ of the earth, ולכל and to every עוף fowl השׁמים of the air, ולכל and to every thing רומשׂ that creepeth על upon הארץ the earth, אשׁר wherein בו נפשׁ life, חיה life, את כל every ירק green עשׂב herb לאכלה for meat: ויהי and it was כן׃ so.
31 וירא saw אלהים And God את כל every thing אשׁר that עשׂה he had made, והנה and, behold, טוב good. מאד very ויהי were ערב And the evening ויהי בקר and the morning יום day. השׁשׁי׃ the sixth
