The Temple Is not Completed

1 בשׁנת year שׁתים In the second לדריושׁ of Darius המלך the king, בחדשׁ month, השׁשׁי in the sixth ביום day אחד in the first לחדשׁ of the month, היה came דבר the word יהוה of the LORD ביד by חגי Haggai הנביא the prophet אל unto זרבבל Zerubbabel בן the son שׁאלתיאל of Shealtiel, פחת governor יהודה of Judah, ואל and to יהושׁע Joshua בן the son יהוצדק of Josedech, הכהן priest, הגדול the high לאמר׃ saying,

2 כה Thus אמר speaketh יהוה the LORD צבאות of hosts, לאמר saying, העם people הזה This אמרו say, לא is not עת The time בא come, עת the time בית house יהוה that the LORD's להבנות׃ should be built.

3 ויהי Then came דבר the word יהוה of the LORD ביד by חגי Haggai הנביא the prophet, לאמר׃ saying,

4 העת time לכם אתם for you, O ye, לשׁבת to dwell בבתיכם houses, ספונים in your ceiled והבית house הזה and this חרב׃ waste?

5 ועתה Now כה therefore thus אמר saith יהוה the LORD צבאות of hosts; שׂימו לבבכםל דרכיכם׃ your ways.

6 זרעתם Ye have sown הרבה much, והבא and bring in מעט little; אכול ye eat, ואין but ye have not enough; לשׂבעה שׁתו ye drink, ואין but ye are not filled with drink; לשׁכרה but ye are not filled with drink; לבושׁ ye clothe ואין you, but there is none warm; לחם לו והמשׂתכר and he that earneth wages משׂתכר earneth wages אל into צרור a bag נקוב׃ with holes.

The Temple Must Be Completed

7 כה Thus אמר saith יהוה the LORD צבאות of hosts; שׂימו לבבכםל דרכיכם׃ your ways.

8 עלו Go up ההר to the mountain, והבאתם and bring עץ wood, ובנו and build הבית the house; וארצה and I will take pleasure בו ואכבד in it, and I will be glorified, אמר saith יהוה׃ the LORD.

9 פנה Ye looked אל for הרבה much, והנה and, lo, למעט to little; והבאתם and when ye brought הבית home, ונפחתי I did blow בו יען Because מה נאם saith יהוה צבאות of hosts. יען ביתי of mine house אשׁר that הוא חרב waste, ואתם and ye רצים run אישׁ every man לביתו׃ unto his own house.

10 על over כן עליכםלאו you is stayed שׁמים the heaven מטל from dew, והארץ and the earth כלאה is stayed יבולה׃ her fruit.

11 ואקרא And I called חרב for a drought על upon הארץ the land, ועל and upon ההרים the mountains, ועל and upon הדגן the corn, ועל and upon התירושׁ the new wine, ועל and upon היצהר the oil, ועל and upon אשׁר which תוציא bringeth forth, האדמה the ground ועל and upon האדם men, ועל and upon הבהמה cattle, ועל and upon כל all יגיע the labor כפים׃ of the hands.

12 וישׁמע obeyed זרבבל Then Zerubbabel בן the son שׁלתיאל of Shealtiel, ויהושׁע and Joshua בן the son יהוצדק of Josedech, הכהן priest, הגדול the high וכל with all שׁארית the remnant העם of the people, בקול the voice יהוה of the LORD אלהיהם their God, ועל דברי and the words חגי of Haggai הנביא the prophet, כאשׁר as שׁלחו had sent יהוה the LORD אלהיהם their God וייראו did fear העם him, and the people מפני before יהוה׃ the LORD.

13 ויאמר Then spoke חגי Haggai מלאך messenger יהוה the LORD's במלאכות message יהוה in the LORD's לעם unto the people, לאמר saying, אני I אתכם with נאם you, saith יהוה׃ the LORD.

14 ויער stirred up יהוה And the LORD את רוח the spirit זרבבל of Zerubbabel בן the son שׁלתיאל of Shealtiel, פחת governor יהודה of Judah, ואת רוח and the spirit יהושׁע of Joshua בן the son יהוצדק of Josedech, הכהן priest, הגדול the high ואת רוח and the spirit כל of all שׁארית the remnant העם of the people; ויבאו and they came ויעשׂו and did מלאכה work בבית in the house יהוה of the LORD צבאות of hosts, אלהיהם׃ their God,

15 ביום day עשׂרים and twentieth וארבעה In the four לחדשׁ month, בשׁשׁי of the sixth בשׁנת year שׁתים in the second לדריושׁ of Darius המלך׃ the king.
