Jonah's Disobedience to the First Call of God
1 ויהי came דבר Now the word יהוה of the LORD אל unto יונה Jonah בן the son אמתי of Amittai, לאמר׃ saying,
2 קום Arise, לך go אל to נינוה Nineveh, העיר city, הגדולה that great וקרא and cry עליה against כי it; for עלתה is come up רעתם their wickedness לפני׃ before
3 ויקם rose up יונה But Jonah לברח to flee תרשׁישׁה unto Tarshish מלפני from the presence יהוה of the LORD, וירד and went down יפו to Joppa; וימצא and he found אניה a ship באה going תרשׁישׁ to Tarshish: ויתן so he paid שׂכרה the fare וירד thereof, and went down בה לבוא into it, to go עמהם with תרשׁישׁה them unto Tarshish מלפני from the presence יהוה׃ of the LORD.
4 ויהוה But the LORD הטיל sent out רוח wind גדולה a great אל into הים the sea, ויהי and there was סער tempest גדול a mighty בים in the sea, והאניה so that the ship חשׁבה was like להשׁבר׃ to be broken.
5 וייראו were afraid, המלחים Then the mariners ויזעקו and cried אישׁ every man אל unto אלהיו his god, ויטלו and cast forth את הכלים the wares אשׁר that באניה in the ship אל into הים the sea, להקל to lighten מעליהם of ויונה them. But Jonah ירד was gone down אל into ירכתי the sides הספינה of the ship; וישׁכב and he lay, וירדם׃ and was fast asleep.
6 ויקרב came אליו to רב החבליאמר him, and said לו מה unto him, What לך נרדם meanest thou, O sleeper? קום arise, קרא call אל upon אלהיך thy God, אולי if so be יתעשׁת will think האלהים that God לנו ולא not. נאבד׃ upon us, that we perish
7 ויאמרו And they said אישׁ every one אל to רעהו his fellow, לכו Come, ונפילה and let us cast גורלות lots, ונדעה that we may know בשׁלמי for whose cause הרעה evil הזאת this לנו ויפלו upon us. So they cast גורלות lots, ויפל fell הגורל and the lot על upon יונה׃ Jonah.
8 ויאמרו Then said אליו they unto הגידה him, Tell נא us, we pray thee, לנו באשׁר for whose cause למי for whose cause הרעה evil הזאת this לנו מה upon us; What מלאכתך thine occupation? ומאין and whence תבוא comest מה thou? what ארצך thy country? ואי and of what מזה עם people אתה׃ thou?
9 ויאמר And he said אליהם unto עברי a Hebrew; אנכי them, I ואת יהוה the LORD, אלהי the God השׁמים of heaven, אני and I ירא אשׁר which עשׂה hath made את הים the sea ואת היבשׁה׃ and the dry
10 וייראו afraid, האנשׁים יראהדולה exceedingly ויאמרו and said אליו unto מה him, Why זאת this? עשׂית hast thou done כי For ידעו knew האנשׁים כי that מלפני from the presence יהוה הוא he ברח fled כי because הגיד he had told להם׃
11 ויאמרו Then said אליו they unto מה him, What נעשׂה shall we do לך וישׁתק may be calm הים unto thee, that the sea מעלינו unto כי us? for הים the sea הולך wrought, וסער׃ and was tempestuous.
12 ויאמר And he said אליהם unto שׂאוני them, Take me up, והטילני and cast me forth אל into הים the sea; וישׁתק be calm הים so shall the sea מעליכם unto כי you: for יודע know אני I כי that בשׁלי for my sake הסער tempest הגדול great הזה this עליכם׃ upon
13 ויחתרו rowed האנשׁים להשׁיב hard to bring אל to היבשׁה the land; ולא not: יכלו but they could כי for הים the sea הולך wrought, וסער and was tempestuous עליהם׃ against
14 ויקראו Wherefore they cried אל unto יהוה the LORD, ויאמרו and said, אנה we beseech thee, יהוה O LORD, אל let us not נא We beseech thee, נאבדה perish בנפשׁ life, האישׁ man's הזה for this ואל not תתן and lay עלינו upon דם blood: נקיא us innocent כי for אתה thou, יהוה O LORD, כאשׁר as חפצת it pleased עשׂית׃ hast done
15 וישׂאו So they took up את יונה Jonah, ויטלהו and cast him forth אל into הים the sea: ויעמד ceased הים and the sea מזעפו׃ from her raging.
16 וייראו feared האנשׁים Then the men יראה גדולה exceedingly, את יהוה the LORD ויזבחו and offered זבח a sacrifice ליהוה unto the LORD, וידרו and made נדרים׃ vows.
Great Salvation of Jonah by the Fish
17 וימן had prepared יהוה Now the LORD דג fish גדול a great לבלע to swallow up את יונה Jonah. ויהי was יונה And Jonah במעי in the belly הדג of the fish שׁלשׁה three ימים days ושׁלשׁה and three לילות׃ nights.
