Judah Fails to Drive Out the Inhabitants
1 ויהי it came to pass, אחרי Now after מות the death יהושׁע of Joshua וישׁאלו asked בני that the children ישׂראל of Israel ביהוה the LORD, לאמר saying, מי Who יעלה shall go up לנו אל for us against הכנעני the Canaanites בתחלה first, להלחם׃ to fight
2 ויאמר said, יהוה And the LORD יהודה Judah יעלה shall go up: הנה behold, נתתי I have delivered את הארץ the land בידו׃ into his hand.
3 ויאמר said יהודה And Judah לשׁמעון unto Simeon אחיו his brother, עלה Come up אתי with בגורלי me into my lot, ונלחמה that we may fight בכנעני against the Canaanites; והלכתי will go גם likewise אני and I אתך with בגורלך thee into thy lot. וילך went אתו with שׁמעון׃ So Simeon
4 ויעל went up; יהודה And Judah ויתן delivered יהוה and the LORD את הכנעני the Canaanites והפרזי and the Perizzites בידם into their hand: ויכום and they slew בבזק of them in Bezek עשׂרת ten אלפים thousand אישׁ׃ men.
5 וימצאו And they found את אדני בזק Adoni-bezek בבזק in Bezek: וילחמו and they fought בו ויכו against him, and they slew את הכנעני the Canaanites ואת הפרזי׃ and the Perizzites.
6 וינס fled; אדני בזק But Adoni-bezek וירדפו and they pursued אחריו after ויאחזו him, and caught אתו ויקצצו him, and cut off את בהנות his thumbs ידיו his thumbs ורגליו׃ and his great toes.
7 ויאמר said, אדני בזק And Adoni-bezek שׁבעים Threescore and ten מלכים kings, בהנות having their thumbs ידיהם having their thumbs ורגליהם and their great toes מקצצים cut off, היו מלקטים gathered תחת under שׁלחני my table: כאשׁר as עשׂיתי I have done, כן so שׁלם hath requited לי אלהים God ויביאהו me. And they brought ירושׁלם him to Jerusalem, וימת he died. שׁם׃ and there
8 וילחמו had fought בני Now the children יהודה of Judah בירושׁלם against Jerusalem, וילכדו and had taken אותה ויכוה it, and smitten לפי it with the edge חרב of the sword, ואת העיר the city שׁלחו and set באשׁ׃ on fire.
9 ואחר And afterward ירדו went down בני the children יהודה of Judah להלחם to fight בכנעני against the Canaanites, יושׁב that dwelt ההר in the mountain, והנגב and in the south, והשׁפלה׃ and in the valley.
10 וילך went יהודה And Judah אל הכנעני the Canaanites היושׁב that dwelt בחברון in Hebron: ושׁם (now the name חברון of Hebron לפנים before קרית ארבע Kirjath-arba:) ויכו and they slew את שׁשׁי Sheshai, ואת אחימן and Ahiman, ואת תלמי׃ and Talmai.
11 וילך he went משׁם אל against יושׁבי the inhabitants דביר of Debir: ושׁם and the name דביר of Debir לפנים before קרית ספר׃ Kirjath-sepher:
12 ויאמר said, כלב And Caleb אשׁר He that יכה smiteth את קרית ספר Kirjath-sepher, ולכדה and taketh ונתתי it, to him will I give לו את עכסהתי my daughter לאשׁה׃ to wife.
13 וילכדה took עתניאל And Othniel בן the son קנז of Kenaz, אחי brother, כלב Caleb's הקטן younger ממנו ויתן it: and he gave לו את עכסהתו his daughter לאשׁה׃ to wife.
14 ויהי And it came to pass, בבואה when she came ותסיתהו that she moved לשׁאול him to ask מאת אביה her father השׂדה a field: ותצנח and she lighted מעל from off החמור ass; ויאמר said לה כלב and Caleb מה׃ unto her, What
15 ותאמר And she said לו הבה unto him, Give לי ברכה me a blessing: כי for ארץ land; הנגב me a south נתתני thou hast given ונתתה give לי גלת me also springs מים of water. ויתן gave לה כלב And Caleb את גלת springs עלית her the upper ואת גלת springs. תחתית׃ and the nether
16 ובני And the children קיני of the Kenite, חתן father-in-law, משׁה Moses' עלו went up מעיר out of the city התמרים of palm trees את with בני the children יהודה of Judah מדבר into the wilderness יהודה of Judah, אשׁר which בנגב in the south ערד of Arad; וילך and they went וישׁב and dwelt את among העם׃ the people.
17 וילך went יהודה And Judah את with שׁמעון Simeon אחיו his brother, ויכו and they slew את הכנעני the Canaanites יושׁב that inhabited צפת Zephath, ויחרימו and utterly destroyed אותה ויקרא was called את שׁם it. And the name העיר of the city חרמה׃ Hormah.
18 וילכד took יהודה Also Judah את עזה Gaza ואת גבולה withthe coast ואת אשׁקלון thereof, and Askelon ואת גבולה with the coast ואת עקרון thereof, and Ekron ואת גבולה׃ with the coast
19 ויהי was יהוה And the LORD את with יהודה Judah; וירשׁ and he drove out את ההר the mountain; כי but לא could not להורישׁ drive out את ישׁבי the inhabitants העמק of the valley, כי because רכב they had chariots ברזל׃ of iron.
20 ויתנו And they gave לכלב unto Caleb, את חברון Hebron כאשׁר as דבר said: משׁה Moses ויורשׁ and he expelled משׁם thence את שׁלשׁה the three בני sons הענק׃ of Anak.
Benjamin Fails to Drive Out the Inhabitants
21 ואת היבוסי the Jebusites ישׁב that inhabited ירושׁלם Jerusalem; לא did not הורישׁו drive out בני And the children בנימן of Benjamin וישׁב dwell היבוסי but the Jebusites את with בני the children בנימן of Benjamin בירושׁלם in Jerusalem עד unto היום day. הזה׃ this
Joseph Fails to Drive Out the Inhabitants
22 ויעלו went up בית And the house יוסף of Joseph, גם also הם they בית אל against Bethel: ויהוה and the LORD עמם׃ with
23 ויתירו sent to descry בית And the house יוסף of Joseph בבית אל Bethel. ושׁם (Now the name העיר of the city לפנים before לוז׃ Luz.)
24 ויראו saw השׁמרים And the spies אישׁ a man יוצא come forth מן out of העיר the city, ויאמרו and they said לו הראנו unto him, Show נא us, we pray thee, את מבוא the entrance העיר into the city, ועשׂינו and we will show עמך and we will show חסד׃ thee mercy.
25 ויראם And when he showed את מבוא them the entrance העיר into the city, ויכו they smote את העיר the city לפי with the edge חרב of the sword; ואת האישׁ the man ואת כל and all משׁפחתו his family. שׁלחו׃ but they let go
26 וילך went האישׁ And the man ארץ into the land החתים of the Hittites, ויבן and built עיר a city, ויקרא and called שׁמה the name לוז thereof Luz: הוא which שׁמה the name עד thereof unto היום day. הזה׃ this
27 ולא Neither הורישׁ drive out מנשׁה did Manasseh את בית שׁאן Beth-shean ואת בנותיה and her towns, ואת תענך nor Taanach ואת בנתיה and her towns, ואת ישׁב nor the inhabitants דור of Dor ואת בנותיה and her towns, ואת יושׁבי nor the inhabitants יבלעם of Ibleam ואת בנתיה and her towns, ואת יושׁבי nor the inhabitants מגדו of Megiddo ואת בנותיה and her towns: ויואל would הכנעני but the Canaanites לשׁבת dwell בארץ land. הזאת׃ in that
28 ויהי And it came to pass, כי when חזק was strong, ישׂראל Israel וישׂם that they put את הכנעני the Canaanites למס to tribute, והורישׁ utterly drive them out. לא and did not הורישׁו׃ utterly drive them out.
29 ואפרים did Ephraim לא Neither הורישׁ drive out את הכנעני the Canaanites היושׁב that dwelt בגזר in Gezer; וישׁב dwelt הכנעני but the Canaanites בקרבו among בגזר׃ in Gezer
Zebulun Fails to Drive Out the Inhabitants
30 זבולן did Zebulun לא Neither הורישׁ drive out את יושׁבי the inhabitants קטרון of Kitron, ואת יושׁבי nor the inhabitants נהלל of Nahalol; וישׁב dwelt הכנעני but the Canaanites בקרבו among ויהיו them, and became למס׃ tributaries.
Asher Fails to Drive Out the Inhabitants
31 אשׁר did Asher לא Neither הורישׁ drive out את ישׁבי the inhabitants עכו of Accho, ואת יושׁבי nor the inhabitants צידון of Zidon, ואת אחלב nor of Ahlab, ואת אכזיב nor of Achzib, ואת חלבה nor of Helbah, ואת אפיק nor of Aphik, ואת רחב׃ nor of Rehob:
32 וישׁב dwelt האשׁרי But the Asherites בקרב among הכנעני the Canaanites, ישׁבי the inhabitants הארץ of the land: כי for לא they did not הורישׁו׃ drive them out.
Naphtali Fails to Drive Out the Inhabitants
33 נפתלי did Naphtali לא Neither הורישׁ drive out את ישׁבי the inhabitants בית שׁמשׁ of Beth-shemesh, ואת ישׁבי nor the inhabitants בית ענת of Beth-anath; וישׁב but he dwelt בקרב among הכנעני the Canaanites, ישׁבי the inhabitants הארץ of the land: וישׁבי nevertheless the inhabitants בית שׁמשׁ of Beth-shemesh ובית ענת and of Beth-anath היו became להם למס׃ tributaries
Dan Fails to Drive Out the Inhabitants
34 וילחצו forced האמרי And the Amorites את בני the children דן of Dan ההרה into the mountain: כי for לא they would not נתנו suffer לרדת them to come down לעמק׃ to the valley:
35 ויואל would האמרי But the Amorites לשׁבת dwell בהר in mount חרס Heres באילון in Aijalon, ובשׁעלבים and in Shaalbim: ותכבד prevailed, יד yet the hand בית of the house יוסף of Joseph ויהיו so that they became למס׃ tributaries.
36 וגבול And the coast האמרי of the Amorites ממעלה עקרבים מהסלע from the rock, ומעלה׃ and upward.
