The First Census of Israel
1 וידבר spoke יהוה And the LORD אל unto משׁה Moses במדבר in the wilderness סיני of Sinai, באהל in the tabernacle מועד of the congregation, באחד on the first לחדשׁ month, השׁני of the second בשׁנה year השׁנית in the second לצאתם after they were come out מארץ of the land מצרים of Egypt, לאמר׃ saying,
2 שׂאו Take את ראשׁ ye the sum כל of all עדת the congregation בני of the children ישׂראל of Israel, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר with the number שׁמות of names, כל every זכר male לגלגלתם׃ by their polls;
3 מבן old עשׂרים From twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that are able to go forth צבא to war בישׂראל in Israel: תפקדו shall number אתם לצבאתם them by their armies. אתה thou ואהרן׃ and Aaron
4 ואתכם And with יהיו you there shall be אישׁ a man אישׁ of every למטה tribe; אישׁ every one ראשׁ head לבית of the house אבתיו of his fathers. הוא׃
5 ואלה And these שׁמות the names האנשׁים of the men אשׁר that יעמדו shall stand אתכם with לראובן you: of Reuben; אליצור Elizur בן the son שׁדיאור׃ of Shedeur.
6 לשׁמעון Of Simeon; שׁלמיאל Shelumiel בן the son צורישׁדי׃ of Zurishaddai.
7 ליהודה Of Judah; נחשׁון Nahshon בן the son עמינדב׃ of Amminadab.
8 לישׂשכר Of Issachar; נתנאל Nethaneel בן the son צוער׃ of Zuar.
9 לזבולן Of Zebulun; אליאב Eliab בן the son חלן׃ of Helon.
10 לבני Of the children יוסף of Joseph: לאפרים of Ephraim; אלישׁמע Elishama בן the son עמיהוד of Ammihud: למנשׁה of Manasseh; גמליאל Gamaliel בן the son פדהצור׃ of Pedahzur.
11 לבנימן Of Benjamin; אבידן Abidan בן the son גדעני׃ of Gideoni.
12 לדן Of Dan; אחיעזר Ahiezer בן the son עמישׁדי׃ of Ammishaddai.
13 לאשׁר Of Asher; פגעיאל Pagiel בן the son עכרן׃ of Ocran.
14 לגד Of Gad; אליסף Eliasaph בן the son דעואל׃ of Deuel.
15 לנפתלי Of Naphtali; אחירע Ahira בן the son עינן׃ of Enan.
16 אלה These קריאי העדה of the congregation, נשׂיאי princes מטות of the tribes אבותם of their fathers, ראשׁי heads אלפי of thousands ישׂראל in Israel. הם׃
17 ויקח took משׁה And Moses ואהרן and Aaron את האנשׁיםאלה these אשׁר which נקבו are expressed בשׁמות׃ by names:
18 ואת כל all העדה the congregation הקהילו And they assembled באחד together on the first לחדשׁ month, השׁני of the second ויתילדו and they declared their pedigrees על after משׁפחתם their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמות of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, לגלגלתם׃ by their polls.
19 כאשׁר As צוה commanded יהוה the LORD את משׁה Moses, ויפקדם so he numbered במדבר them in the wilderness סיני׃ of Sinai.
20 ויהיו בני And the children ראובן of Reuben, בכר eldest son, ישׂראל Israel's תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמות of the names, לגלגלתם by their polls, כל every זכר male מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
21 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe ראובן of Reuben, שׁשׁה and six וארבעים forty אלף thousand וחמשׁ and five מאות׃ hundred.
22 לבני Of the children שׁמעון of Simeon, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, פקדיו those that were numbered במספר of them, according to the number שׁמות of the names, לגלגלתם by their polls, כל every זכר male מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
23 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe שׁמעון of Simeon, תשׁעה and nine וחמשׁים fifty אלף thousand ושׁלשׁ and three מאות׃ hundred.
24 לבני Of the children גד of Gad, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמות of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
25 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe גד of Gad, חמשׁה and five וארבעים forty אלף thousand ושׁשׁ six מאות hundred וחמשׁים׃ and fifty.
26 לבני Of the children יהודה of Judah, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
27 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe יהודה of Judah, ארבעה threescore and fourteen ושׁבעים threescore and fourteen אלף thousand ושׁשׁ and six מאות׃ hundred.
28 לבני Of the children ישׂשכר of Issachar, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
29 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe ישׂשכר of Issachar, ארבעה and four וחמשׁים fifty אלף thousand וארבע and four מאות׃ hundred.
30 לבני Of the children זבולן of Zebulun, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
31 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe זבולן of Zebulun, שׁבעה and seven וחמשׁים fifty אלף thousand וארבע and four מאות׃ hundred.
32 לבני Of the children יוסף of Joseph, לבני of the children אפרים of Ephraim, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
33 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe אפרים of Ephraim, ארבעים forty אלף thousand וחמשׁ and five מאות׃ hundred.
34 לבני Of the children מנשׁה of Manasseh, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמות of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
35 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe מנשׁה of Manasseh, שׁנים and two ושׁלשׁים thirty אלף thousand ומאתים׃ and two hundred.
36 לבני Of the children בנימן of Benjamin, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
37 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe בנימן of Benjamin, חמשׁה and five ושׁלשׁים thirty אלף thousand וארבע and four מאות׃ hundred.
38 לבני Of the children דן of Dan, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
39 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe דן of Dan, שׁנים and two ושׁשׁים threescore אלף thousand ושׁבע and seven מאות׃ hundred.
40 לבני Of the children אשׁר of Asher, תולדתם by their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
41 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe אשׁר of Asher, אחד and one וארבעים forty אלף thousand וחמשׁ and five מאות׃ hundred.
42 בני Of the children נפתלי of Naphtali, תולדתם throughout their generations, למשׁפחתם after their families, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, במספר according to the number שׁמת of the names, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא׃ to war;
43 פקדיהם Those that were numbered למטה of them, of the tribe נפתלי of Naphtali, שׁלשׁה and three וחמשׁים fifty אלף thousand וארבע and four מאות׃ hundred.
44 אלה These הפקדים those that were numbered, אשׁר which פקד numbered, משׁה Moses ואהרן and Aaron ונשׂיאי and the princes ישׂראל of Israel, שׁנים twelve עשׂר twelve אישׁ men: אישׁ אחד one לבית for the house אבתיו of his fathers. היו׃ was
45 ויהיו So were כל all פקודי those that were numbered בני of the children ישׂראל of Israel, לבית by the house אבתם of their fathers, מבן old עשׂרים from twenty שׁנה years ומעלה and upward, כל all יצא that were able to go forth צבא to war בישׂראל׃ in Israel;
46 ויהיו were כל Even all הפקדים they that were numbered שׁשׁ six מאות hundred אלף thousand ושׁלשׁת and three אלפים thousand וחמשׁ and five מאות hundred וחמשׁים׃ and fifty.
47 והלוים But the Levites למטה after the tribe אבתם of their fathers לא were not התפקדו numbered בתוכם׃ among
48 וידבר had spoken יהוה For the LORD אל unto משׁה Moses, לאמר׃ saying,
49 אך Only את מטה the tribe לוי לא thou shalt not תפקד number ואת ראשׁם the sum לא neither תשׂא take בתוך of them among בני the children ישׂראל׃ of Israel:
50 ואתה But thou הפקד shalt appoint את הלוים the Levites על over משׁכן the tabernacle העדת of testimony, ועל and over כל all כליו the vessels ועל thereof, and over כל all things אשׁר that לו המה to it: they ישׂאו shall bear את המשׁכן the tabernacle, ואת כל and all כליו the vessels והם thereof; and they ישׁרתהו shall minister וסביב round about למשׁכן the tabernacle. יחנו׃ unto it, and shall encamp
51 ובנסע setteth forward, המשׁכן And when the tabernacle יורידו אתולוים the Levites ובחנת is to be pitched, המשׁכן and when the tabernacle יקימו אתולוים the Levites והזר and the stranger הקרב יומת׃ shall be put to death.
52 וחנו shall pitch their tents, בני And the children ישׂראל of Israel אישׁ every man על by מחנהו his own camp, ואישׁ and every man על by דגלו his own standard, לצבאתם׃ throughout their hosts.
53 והלוים But the Levites יחנו shall pitch סביב round about למשׁכן the tabernacle העדת of testimony, ולא no יהיה that there be קצף wrath על upon עדת the congregation בני of the children ישׂראל of Israel: ושׁמרו shall keep הלוים and the Levites את משׁמרת the charge משׁכן of the tabernacle העדות׃ of testimony.
54 ויעשׂו did בני And the children ישׂראל of Israel ככל according to all אשׁר that צוה commanded יהוה the LORD את משׁה Moses, כן so עשׂו׃ did
