1 ויהי Now it came to pass בימי in the days שׁפט when the judges השׁפטים ruled, ויהי that there was רעב a famine בארץ in the land. וילך went אישׁ And a certain man מבית לחם יהודהגור to sojourn בשׂדי in the country מואב of Moab, הוא he, ואשׁתו and his wife, ושׁני and his two בניו׃ sons.
2 ושׁם And the name האישׁ of the man אלימלך Elimelech, ושׁם and the name אשׁתו of his wife נעמי Naomi, ושׁם and the name שׁני of his two בניו sons מחלון Mahlon וכליון and Chilion, אפרתים Ephrathites מבית לחם יהודהיבאו And they came שׂדי into the country מואב of Moab, ויהיו and continued שׁם׃ there.
3 וימת died; אלימלך And Elimelech אישׁ husband נעמי Naomi's ותשׁאר was left, היא and she ושׁני and her two בניה׃ sons.
4 וישׂאו And they took להם נשׁים them wives מאביות of the women of Moab; שׁם the name האחת of the one ערפה Orpah, ושׁם and the name השׁנית of the other רות Ruth: וישׁבו and they dwelled שׁם there כעשׂר about ten שׁנים׃ years.
5 וימותו died גם also שׁניהם both מחלון And Mahlon וכליון and Chilion ותשׁאר was left האשׁה of them; and the woman משׁני ילדיהמאישׁה׃ and her husband.
Naomi Bids Her Daughters-in-Law Leave Her
6 ותקם arose היא Then she וכלתיה with her daughters-in-law, ותשׁב that she might return משׂדי from the country מואב of Moab: כי for שׁמעה she had heard בשׂדה in the country מואב of Moab כי how that פקד had visited יהוה אתמו his people לתת in giving להם לחם׃ them bread.
7 ותצא Wherefore she went forth מן out of המקום the place אשׁר where היתה she was, שׁמה where ושׁתי and her two כלתיה daughters-in-law עמה with her; ותלכנה and they went בדרך on the way לשׁוב to return אל unto ארץ the land יהודה׃ of Judah.
8 ותאמר said נעמי And Naomi לשׁתי unto her two כלתיה daughters-in-law, לכנה Go, שׁבנה return אשׁה each לבית house: אמה to her mother's יעשׂה deal יהוה the LORD עמכם with חסד kindly כאשׁר you, as עשׂיתם ye have dealt עם with המתים the dead, ועמדי׃ and with
9 יתן grant יהוה The LORD לכם ומצאן you that ye may find מנוחה rest, אשׁה each בית in the house אישׁה of her husband. ותשׁק Then she kissed להן ותשׂאנה them; and they lifted up קולן their voice, ותבכינה׃ and wept.
10 ותאמרנה And they said לה כי unto her, Surely אתך with נשׁוב we will return לעמך׃ thee unto thy people.
11 ותאמר said, נעמי >font color="#000000">And Naomi שׁבנה Turn again, בנתי my daughters: למה why תלכנה will ye go עמי with העוד me? there yet לי בנים sons במעי in my womb, והיו that they may be לכם לאנשׁים׃ your husbands?
12 שׁבנה Turn again, בנתי my daughters, לכן go כי for זקנתי I am too old מהיות to have לאישׁ a husband. כי If אמרתי I should say, ישׁ I have לי תקוה hope, גם also הייתי I should have הלילה tonight, לאישׁ a husband וגם and should also ילדתי bear בנים׃ sons;
13 הלהן תשׂברנה Would ye tarry עד till אשׁר till יגדלו they were grown? הלהן תעגנה would ye stay לבלתי היות from having לאישׁ husbands? אל nay, בנתי my daughters; כי for מר it grieveth לי מאד me much מכם for כי your sakes that יצאה is gone out בי יד the hand יהוה׃ of the LORD
14 ותשׂנה And they lifted up קולן their voice, ותבכינה and wept עוד again: ותשׁק kissed ערפה and Orpah לחמותה her mother-in-law; ורות but Ruth דבקה׃ cleaved
15 ותאמר And she said, הנה Behold, שׁבה is gone back יבמתך thy sister-in-law אל unto עמה her people, ואל and unto אלהיה her gods: שׁובי return אחרי thou after יבמתך׃ thy sister-in-law.
Ruth Chooses to Remain with Naomi
16 ותאמר said, רות And Ruth אל me not תפגעי Entreat בי לעזבך to leave לשׁוב thee, to return מאחריך from following after כי thee: for אל whither אשׁר whither תלכי thou goest, אלך I will go; ובאשׁר and where תליני thou lodgest, אלין I will lodge: עמך thy people עמי my people, ואלהיך and thy God אלהי׃ my God:
17 באשׁר Where תמותי thou diest, אמות will I die, ושׁם and there אקבר will I be buried: כה so יעשׂה do יהוה the LORD לי וכה also, יסיף to me, and more כי but המות death יפריד part ביני thee ובינך׃ and me.
18 ותרא When she saw כי that מתאמצת was steadfastly minded היא she ללכת to go אתה with ותחדל her, then she left לדבר speaking אליה׃ unto
Ruth and Naomi Travel to Bethlehem
19 ותלכנה went שׁתיהם So they two עד until באנה they came בית לחם to Bethlehem. ויהי And it came to pass, כבאנה when they were come בית לחם to Bethlehem, ותהם was moved כל that all העיר the city עליהן about ותאמרנה them, and they said, הזאת this נעמי׃ Naomi?
20 ותאמר And she said אליהן unto אל me not תקראנה them, Call לי נעמי Naomi, קראן call לי מרא me Mara: כי for המר hath dealt very bitterly שׁדי the Almighty לי מאד׃ hath dealt very bitterly
21 אני I מלאה הלכתי went out וריקם empty: השׁיבני hath brought me home again יהוה and the LORD למה why תקראנה call לי נעמי ye me Naomi, ויהוה seeing the LORD ענה hath testified בי ושׁדי against me, and the Almighty הרע׃ hath afflicted
22 ותשׁב returned, נעמי So Naomi ורות and Ruth המואביה the Moabitess, כלתה her daughter-in-law, עמה with her, השׁבה which returned משׂדי out of the country מואב of Moab: והמה and they באו came בית לחם to Bethlehem בתחלת in the beginning קציר harvest. שׂערים׃ of barley
