Daniel Is Taken to Babylon
1 בשׁנת year שׁלושׁ In the third למלכות of the reign יהויקים of Jehoiakim מלך king יהודה of Judah בא came נבוכדנאצר Nebuchadnezzar מלך king בבל of Babylon ירושׁלם unto Jerusalem, ויצר and besieged עליה׃ and besieged
2 ויתן gave אדני And the Lord בידו into his hand, את יהויקים Jehoiakim מלך king יהודה of Judah ומקצת with part כלי of the vessels בית of the house האלהים of God: ויביאם which he carried into ארץ the land שׁנער of Shinar בית to the house אלהיו of his god; ואת הכלים the vessels הביא and he brought בית house אוצר into the treasure אלהיו׃ of his god.
3 ויאמר spoke המלך And the king לאשׁפנז unto Ashpenaz רב the master סריסיו of his eunuchs, להביא that he should bring מבני of the children ישׂראל of Israel, ומזרע המלוכהמן of the children הפרתמים׃ the princes;
4 ילדים Children אשׁר in whom אין no בהם כל no מאום blemish, וטובי but well favored, מראה but well favored, ומשׂכילים and skillful בכל in all חכמה wisdom, וידעי and cunning דעת in knowledge, ומביני and understanding מדע science, ואשׁר and such כח as ability בהם לעמד in them to stand בהיכל palace, המלך in the king's וללמדם and whom they might teach ספר the learning ולשׁון and the tongue כשׂדים׃ of the Chaldeans.
5 וימן appointed להם המלך And the king דבר provision יום them a daily ביומו them a daily מפת בג המלך the king. ומיין and of the wine משׁתיו which he drank: ולגדלם so nourishing שׁנים years, שׁלושׁ them three ומקצתם that at the end יעמדו thereof they might stand לפני before המלך׃
6 ויהי Now among these were בהם מבני of the children יהודה of Judah, דניאל Daniel, חנניה Hananiah, מישׁאל Mishael, ועזריה׃ and Azariah:
7 וישׂם gave להם שׂר Unto whom the prince הסריסים of the eunuchs שׁמות names: וישׂם for he gave לדניאל unto Daniel בלטשׁאצר of Belteshazzar; ולחנניה and to Hananiah, שׁדרך of Shadrach; ולמישׁאל and to Mishael, מישׁך of Meshach; ולעזריה and to Azariah, עבד נגו׃ of Abed-nego.
Faithfulness of Daniel in Babylon
8 וישׂם purposed דניאל But Daniel על in לבו his heart אשׁר that לא he would not יתגאל defile himself בפתבג המלךביין nor with the wine משׁתיו which he drank: ויבקשׁ therefore he requested משׂר of the prince הסריסים of the eunuchs אשׁר that לא he might not יתגאל׃ defile himself.
9 ויתן had brought האלהים Now God את דניאל Daniel לחסד into favor ולרחמים and tender love לפני with שׂר the prince הסריסים׃ of the eunuchs.
10 ויאמר said שׂר And the prince הסריסים of the eunuchs לדניאל unto Daniel, ירא אני I את אדני my lord המלך the king, אשׁר who מנה hath appointed את מאכלכם your meat ואת משׁתיכם and your drink: אשׁר for למה why יראה should he see את פניכם your faces זעפים worse liking מן than הילדים the children אשׁר which כגילכם of your sort? וחיבתם then shall ye make endanger את ראשׁי my head למלך׃ to the king.
11 ויאמר Then said דניאל Daniel אל to המלצר Melzar, אשׁר whom מנה had set שׂר the prince הסריסים of the eunuchs על over דניאל Daniel, חנניה Hananiah, מישׁאל Mishael, ועזריה׃ and Azariah,
12 נס Prove נא I beseech thee, את עבדיך thy servants, ימים days; עשׂרה ten ויתנו and let them give לנו מן הזרעים us pulse ונאכלה to eat, ומים and water ונשׁתה׃ to drink.
13 ויראו be looked upon לפניך before מראינו Then let our countenances ומראה thee, and the countenance הילדים of the children האכלים that eat את פתבגמלך וכאשׁר and as תראה thou seest, עשׂה deal עם with עבדיך׃ thy servants.
14 וישׁמע So he consented להם לדבר matter, הזה to them in this וינסם and proved ימים days. עשׂרה׃ them ten
15 ומקצת ימים days עשׂרה of ten נראה appeared מראיהם their countenances טוב fairer ובריאי and fatter בשׂר in flesh מן than כל all הילדים the children האכלים which did eat את פתבגמלך׃
16 ויהי המלצר Thus Melzar נשׂא took away את פתבגם the portion of their meat, ויין and the wine משׁתיהם that they should drink; ונתן and gave להם זרענים׃ them pulse.
The King Finds Favor with Daniel
17 והילדים children, האלה As for these ארבעתם four נתן gave להם האלהים God מדע them knowledge והשׂכל and skill בכל in all ספר learning וחכמה and wisdom: ודניאל and Daniel הבין had understanding בכל in all חזון visions וחלמות׃ and dreams.
18 ולמקצת הימים of the days אשׁר that אמר had said המלך the king להביאם he should bring them in, ויביאם brought them in שׂר then the prince הסריסים of the eunuchs לפני before נבכדנצר׃ Nebuchadnezzar.
19 וידבר communed אתם with המלך And the king ולא none נמצא was found מכלם them; and among them all כדניאל like Daniel, חנניה Hananiah, מישׁאל Mishael, ועזריה and Azariah: ויעמדו therefore stood לפני they before המלך׃ the king.
20 וכל And in all דבר matters חכמת of wisdom בינה understanding, אשׁר that בקשׁ inquired מהם המלך the king וימצאם them, he found עשׂר them ten ידות times על better than כל all החרטמים the magicians האשׁפים astrologers אשׁר that בכל in all מלכותו׃ his realm.
21 ויהי continued דניאל And Daniel עד unto שׁנת year אחת the first לכורשׁ Cyrus. המלך׃ of king
