1 ויהי Now it came to pass בימי in the days אחשׁורושׁ of Ahasuerus, הוא (this אחשׁורושׁ Ahasuerus המלך which reigned, מהדו ועד even unto כושׁ Ethiopia, שׁבע and seven ועשׂרים and twenty ומאה a hundred מדינה׃ provinces:)
2 בימים days, ההם in those כשׁבת המלך when the king אחשׁורושׁ Ahasuerus על on כסא the throne מלכותו of his kingdom, אשׁר which בשׁושׁן in Shushan הבירה׃ the palace,
3 בשׁנת year שׁלושׁ In the third למלכו of his reign, עשׂה he made משׁתה a feast לכל unto all שׂריו his princes ועבדיו and his servants; חיל פרס of Persia ומדי and Media, הפרתמים the nobles ושׂרי and princes המדינות of the provinces, לפניו׃ before
4 בהראתו When he showed את עשׁר the riches כבוד of his glorious מלכותו kingdom ואת יקר and the honor תפארת of his excellent גדולתו majesty ימים days, רבים many שׁמונים and fourscore ומאת a hundred יום׃ days.
5 ובמלואת were expired, הימים days האלה And when these עשׂה made המלך the king לכל unto all העם the people הנמצאים that were present בשׁושׁן in Shushan הבירה the palace, למגדול both unto great ועד קטן and small, משׁתה a feast שׁבעת seven ימים days, בחצר in the court גנת of the garden ביתן palace; המלך׃ of the king's
6 חור white, כרפס green, ותכלת and blue, אחוז fastened בחבלי with cords בוץ of fine linen וארגמן and purple על to גלילי rings כסף silver ועמודי and pillars שׁשׁ of marble: מטות the beds זהב gold וכסף and silver, על upon רצפת a pavement בהט of red, ושׁשׁ and blue, ודר and white, וסחרת׃ and black marble.
7 והשׁקות And they gave drink בכלי in vessels זהב of gold, וכלים (the vessels מכלים שׁונים being diverse ויין wine מלכות and royal רב in abundance, כיד according to the state המלך׃ of the king.
8 והשׁתיה And the drinking כדת according to the law; אין none אנס did compel: כי for כן so יסד had appointed המלך the king על to כל all רב the officers ביתו of his house, לעשׂות that they should do כרצון pleasure. אישׁ ואישׁ׃
9 גם Also ושׁתי Vashti המלכה the queen עשׂתה made משׁתה a feast נשׁים for the women בית house המלכות the royal אשׁר which למלך to king אחשׁורושׁ׃ Ahasuerus.
10 ביום day, השׁביעי On the seventh כטוב לב when the heart המלך of the king ביין with wine, אמר he commanded למהומן Mehuman, בזתא Biztha, חרבונא Harbona, בגתא Bigtha, ואבגתא and Abagtha, זתר Zethar, וכרכס and Carcas, שׁבעת the seven הסריסים chamberlains המשׁרתים that served את פני in the presence המלך the king, אחשׁורושׁ׃ of Ahasuerus
11 להביא To bring את ושׁתי Vashti המלכה the queen לפני before המלך the king בכתר with the crown מלכות royal, להראות to show העמים the people והשׂרים and the princes את יפיה her beauty: כי for טובת fair מראה to look on. היא׃ she
12 ותמאן refused המלכה But the queen ושׁתי Vashti לבוא to come בדבר commandment המלך at the king's אשׁר by ביד by הסריסים chamberlains: ויקצף wroth, המלך therefore was the king מאד very וחמתו and his anger בערה׃ burned
Counsel to King Ahasuerus
13 ויאמר said המלך Then the king לחכמים to the wise men, ידעי which knew העתים the times, כי (for כן so דבר manner המלך the king's לפני toward כל all ידעי that knew דת law ודין׃ and judgment:
14 והקרב And the next אליו unto כרשׁנא him Carshena, שׁתר Shethar, אדמתא Admatha, תרשׁישׁ Tarshish, מרס Meres, מרסנא Marsena, ממוכן Memucan, שׁבעת the seven שׂרי princes פרס of Persia ומדי and Media, ראי which saw פני face, המלך the king's הישׁבים which sat ראשׁנה the first במלכות׃ in the kingdom;)
15 כדת according to law, מה What לעשׂות shall we do במלכה unto the queen ושׁתי Vashti על because אשׁר because לא she hath not עשׂתה performed את מאמר the commandment המלך of the king אחשׁורושׁ Ahasuerus ביד by הסריסים׃ the chamberlains?
16 ויאמר answered מומכן And Memucan לפני before המלך the king והשׂרים and the princes, לא hath not על to המלך the king לבדו only, עותה done wrong ושׁתי Vashti המלכה the queen כי but על also to כל all השׂרים the princes, ועל and to כל all העמים the people אשׁר that בכל in all מדינות the provinces המלך of the king אחשׁורושׁ׃ Ahasuerus.
17 כי For יצא shall come abroad דבר deed המלכה of the queen על unto כל all הנשׁים women, להבזות so that they shall despise בעליהן their husbands בעיניהן in their eyes, באמרם when it shall be reported, המלך The king אחשׁורושׁ Ahasuerus אמר commanded להביא to be brought in את ושׁתי Vashti המלכה the queen לפניו before ולא not. באה׃ him, but she came
18 והיום day הזה this תאמרנה say שׂרות shall the ladies פרס of Persia ומדי and Media אשׁר which שׁמעו have heard of את דבר the deed המלכה of the queen. לכל unto all שׂרי princes, המלך the king's וכדי Thus too much בזיון contempt וקצף׃ and wrath.
19 אם If על it please המלך the king, טוב it please יצא let there go דבר commandment מלכות a royal מלפניו from ויכתב him, and let it be written בדתי among the laws פרס of the Persians ומדי and the Medes, ולא that it be not יעבור altered, אשׁר That לא no תבוא come ושׁתי Vashti לפני more before המלך king אחשׁורושׁ Ahasuerus; ומלכותה her royal estate יתן give המלך and let the king לרעותה unto another הטובה that is better ממנה׃ from
20 ונשׁמע shall be published פתגם decree המלך And when the king's אשׁר which יעשׂה he shall make בכל throughout all מלכותו his empire, כי (for רבה is great,) היא it וכל all הנשׁים the wives יתנו shall give יקר honor, לבעליהן to their husbands למגדול both to great ועד קטן׃ and small.
21 וייטב pleased הדבר And the saying בעיני pleased המלך the king והשׂרים and the princes; ויעשׂ did המלך and the king כדבר according to the word ממוכן׃ of Memucan:
22 וישׁלח For he sent ספרים letters אל into כל all מדינות provinces, המלך the king's אל into מדינה every province ומדינה every province ככתבה according to the writing ואל thereof, and to עם every people ועם every people כלשׁונו after their language, להיות should כל that every אישׁ man שׂרר bear rule בביתו in his own house, ומדבר and that should be published כלשׁון according to the language עמו׃ of every people.
