Israel's Abundant Increase
1 ואלה Now these שׁמות the names בני of the children ישׂראל of Israel, הבאים which came מצרימה into Egypt; את with יעקב Jacob. אישׁ every man וביתו and his household באו׃ came
2 ראובן Reuben, שׁמעון Simeon, לוי Levi, ויהודה׃ and Judah,
3 ישׂשכר Issachar, זבולן Zebulun, ובנימן׃ and Benjamin,
4 דן Dan, ונפתלי and Naphtali, גד Gad, ואשׁר׃ and Asher.
5 ויהי were כל And all נפשׁ the souls יצאי that came out ירך of the loins יעקב of Jacob שׁבעים seventy נפשׁ souls: ויוסף for Joseph היה was במצרים׃ in Egypt
6 וימת died, יוסף And Joseph וכל and all אחיו his brethren, וכל and all הדור generation. ההוא׃ that
7 ובני And the children ישׂראל of Israel פרו were fruitful, וישׁרצו and increased abundantly, וירבו and multiplied, ויעצמו and waxed exceeding mighty; במאד מאדתמלא was filled הארץ and the land אתם׃ with
Israel's Severe Affliction
8 ויקם Now there arose up מלך king חדשׁ a new על over מצרים Egypt, אשׁר which לא not ידע knew את יוסף׃ Joseph.
9 ויאמר And he said אל unto עמו his people, הנה Behold, עם the people בני of the children ישׂראל of Israel רב more ועצום and mightier ממנו׃ than
10 הבה Come נתחכמה on, let us deal wisely לו פן with them; lest ירבה they multiply, והיה and it come to pass, כי that, when תקראנה there falleth out מלחמה any war, ונוסף join גם also הוא they על unto שׂנאינו our enemies, ונלחם and fight בנו ועלה against us, and get them up מן out of הארץ׃ the land.
11 וישׂימו Therefore they did set עליו over שׂרי them taskmasters מסים them taskmasters למען to ענתו afflict בסבלתם them with their burdens. ויבן And they built ערי cities, מסכנות treasure לפרעה for Pharaoh את פתם Pithom ואת רעמסס׃ and Rameses.
12 וכאשׁר But the more יענו they afflicted אתו כן them, the more ירבה they multiplied וכן and grew. יפרץ and grew. ויקצו And they were grieved מפני because בני of the children ישׂראל׃ of Israel.
13 ויעבדו to serve מצרים אתני made the children ישׂראל of Israel בפרך׃ with rigor:
14 וימררו bitter את חייהם And they made their lives בעבדה bondage, קשׁה with hard בחמר in mortar, ובלבנים and in brick, ובכל and in all manner עבדה of service בשׂדה in the field: את כל all עבדתם their service, אשׁר wherein עבדו they made them serve, בהם בפרך׃ with rigor.
Pharaoh Plots the Extinction of Israel
15 ויאמר spoke מלך And the king מצרים of Egypt למילדת midwives, העברית to the Hebrew אשׁר of which שׁם the name האחת of the one שׁפרה Shiphrah, ושׁם and the name השׁנית of the other פועה׃ Puah:
16 ויאמר And he said, בילדכן When ye do the office of a midwife את העבריות to the Hebrew women, וראיתן and see על upon האבנים the stools; אם if בן a son, הוא it והמתן then ye shall kill אתו ואם him: but if בת a daughter, הוא it וחיה׃ then she shall live.
17 ותיראן feared המילדת But the midwives את האלהים God, ולא not עשׂו and did כאשׁר as דבר commanded אליהן commanded מלך the king מצרים of Egypt ותחיין them, but saved את הילדים׃ the men children
18 ויקרא called for מלך And the king מצרים of Egypt למילדת the midwives, ויאמר and said להן מדוע unto them, Why עשׂיתן have ye done הדבר thing, הזה this ותחיין and have saved את הילדים׃ the men children
19 ותאמרן said המילדת And the midwives אל unto פרעה Pharaoh, כי Because לא not כנשׁים women; המצרית as the Egyptian העברית the Hebrew women כי for חיות lively, הנה they בטרם ere תבוא come in אלהן unto המילדת and are delivered וילדו׃ the midwives
20 וייטב dealt well אלהים Therefore God למילדת with the midwives: וירב multiplied, העם and the people ויעצמו and waxed very mighty. מאד׃ and waxed very mighty.
21 ויהי And it came to pass, כי because יראו feared המילדת the midwives את האלהים God, ויעשׂ that he made להם בתים׃ them houses.
22 ויצו charged פרעה And Pharaoh לכל all עמו his people, לאמר saying, כל Every הבן son הילוד that is born היארה into the river, תשׁליכהו ye shall cast וכל and every הבת daughter תחיון׃ ye shall save alive.
