1 אישׁ a man היה There was בארץ in the land עוץ of Uz, איוב Job; שׁמו whose name והיה was האישׁ man ההוא and that תם perfect וישׁר and upright, וירא and one that feared אלהים God, וסר and eschewed מרע׃ evil.
2 ויולדו And there were born לו שׁבעה unto him seven בנים sons ושׁלושׁ and three בנות׃ daughters.
3 ויהי also was מקנהו His substance שׁבעת seven אלפי thousand צאן sheep, ושׁלשׁת and three אלפי thousand גמלים camels, וחמשׁ and five מאות hundred צמד yoke בקר of oxen, וחמשׁ and five מאות hundred אתונות she asses, ועבדה household; רבה great מאד and a very ויהי was האישׁ man ההוא so that this גדול the greatest מכל of all בני the men קדם׃ of the east.
4 והלכו went בניו And his sons ועשׂו and feasted משׁתה and feasted בית houses, אישׁ every one יומו his day; ושׁלחו and sent וקראו and called לשׁלשׁת for their three אחיתיהם sisters לאכל to eat ולשׁתות and to drink עמהם׃ with
5 ויהי And it was כי so, when הקיפו were gone about, ימי the days המשׁתה of feasting וישׁלח sent איוב that Job ויקדשׁם and sanctified והשׁכים them, and rose up early בבקר in the morning, והעלה and offered עלות burnt offerings מספר to the number כלם of them all: כי for אמר said, איוב Job אולי It may be חטאו have sinned, בני that my sons וברכו and cursed אלהים God בלבבם in their hearts. ככה Thus יעשׂה did איוב Job כל continually. הימים׃ continually.
6 ויהי Now there was היום a day ויבאו came בני when the sons האלהים of God להתיצב to present themselves על before יהוה the LORD, ויבוא came גם also השׂטן and Satan בתוכם׃ among
7 ויאמר said יהוה אל unto השׂטן Satan, מאין תבא comest ויען answered השׂטן thou? Then Satan את יהוהיאמר and said, משׁוט בארץ in the earth, ומהתהלך׃ and from walking up and down
8 ויאמר said יהוה And the LORD אל unto השׂטן Satan, השׂמת לבךל עבדי my servant איוב Job, כי that אין none כמהו like him בארץ in the earth, אישׁ man, תם a perfect וישׁר and an upright ירא one that feareth אלהים God, וסר and escheweth מרע׃ evil?
9 ויען answered השׂטן Then Satan את יהוה the LORD, ויאמר and said, החנם for naught? ירא fear איוב Doth Job אלהים׃ God
10 הלא Hast not את thou שׂכת made a hedge בעדו about ובעד him, and about ביתו his house, ובעד and about כל all אשׁר that לו מסביב he hath on every side? מעשׂה the work ידיו of his hands, ברכת thou hast blessed ומקנהו and his substance פרץ is increased בארץ׃ in the land.
11 ואולם But שׁלח put forth נא now, ידך thine hand וגע and touch בכל all אשׁר that לו אם he hath, and לא על thee to פניך thy face. יברכך׃ he will curse
12 ויאמר said יהוה And the LORD אל unto השׂטן Satan, הנה Behold, כל all אשׁר that לו בידך he hath in thy power; רק only אליו upon אל himself put not forth תשׁלח himself put not forth ידך thine hand. ויצא went forth השׂטן So Satan מעם from פני the presence יהוה׃ of the LORD.
13 ויהי And there was היום a day ובניו when his sons ובנתיו and his daughters אכלים eating ושׁתים and drinking יין wine בבית house: אחיהם brother's הבכור׃ in their eldest
14 ומלאך a messenger בא And there came אל unto איוב Job, ויאמר and said, הבקר The oxen היו were חרשׁות plowing, והאתנות and the asses רעות feeding על beside ידיהם׃ beside
15 ותפל fell שׁבא And the Sabeans ותקחם and took them away; ואת הנערים the servants הכו yea, they have slain לפי with the edge חרב of the sword; ואמלטה am escaped רק only אני and I לבדי alone להגיד׃ to tell
16 עוד yet זה While he מדבר speaking, וזה also another, בא there came ויאמר and said, אשׁ The fire אלהים of God נפלה is fallen מן from השׁמים heaven, ותבער and hath burned up בצאן the sheep, ובנערים and the servants, ותאכלם and consumed ואמלטה am escaped רק only אני them; and I לבדי alone להגיד׃ to tell
17 עוד yet זה While he מדבר speaking, וזה also another, בא there came ויאמר and said, כשׂדים The Chaldeans שׂמו made שׁלשׁה out three ראשׁים bands, ויפשׁטו and fell על upon הגמלים the camels, ויקחום and have carried them away, ואת הנערים the servants הכו yea, and slain לפי with the edge חרב of the sword; ואמלטה am escaped רק only אני and I לבדי alone להגיד׃ to tell
18 עד זה While he מדבר speaking, וזה also another, בא there came ויאמר and said, בניך Thy sons ובנותיך and thy daughters אכלים eating ושׁתים and drinking יין wine בבית house: אחיהם brother's הבכור׃ in their eldest
19 והנה And, behold, רוח wind גדולה a great באה there came מעבר from המדבר the wilderness, ויגע and smote בארבע the four פנות corners הבית of the house, ויפל and it fell על upon הנערים the young men, וימותו and they are dead; ואמלטה am escaped רק only אני and I לבדי alone להגיד׃ to tell
20 ויקם arose, איוב Then Job ויקרע and rent את מעלו his mantle, ויגז and shaved את ראשׁו his head, ויפל and fell down ארצה upon the ground, וישׁתחו׃ and worshiped,
21 ויאמר And said, ערם Naked יצתי came I out מבטן אמיערם and naked אשׁוב shall I return שׁמה thither: יהוה the LORD נתן gave, ויהוה and the LORD לקח hath taken away; יהי be שׁם the name יהוה of the LORD. מברך׃ blessed
22 בכל In all זאת this לא not, חטא sinned איוב Job ולא nor נתן charged תפלה foolishly. לאלהים׃ God
